Renovations for the Pike Branch began on December 10, 2023, and have resulted in a variety of new features aimed at fostering a more engaging and accessible environment for all visitors. Updates include a renovated entrance, upgraded restrooms, new group study rooms, a comfort room adjacent to the Children’s Area, a dedicated teen space, a podcast recording studio, and increased access to outlets for device charging. Additionally, improvements to mechanical and lighting systems ensure greater energy efficiency. The branch is also in the process of securing LEEDv4 Silver Certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and resource conservation.

Gregory Hill, CEO of The Indianapolis Public Library, emphasized the importance of preserving cherished elements of the original branch while introducing new features that meet evolving community needs. “We’ve created a welcoming new space that preserves beloved elements from the original branch, like the cherished fish tank that remains a favorite among children,” Hill stated. “This branch is designed to support early childhood literacy, foster learning and belonging, and champion workforce development through digital equity and essential resources. Whether you’re an individual, nonprofit, or small business, we’re here to help you thrive. I’m excited for the community to experience the space and connect with our dedicated staff.”

Leading the branch into its next chapter is Michael Jenkins, who will take on the role of branch manager. With over 13 years of experience in library services, Jenkins is eager to engage with the Pike Township community and cultivate an environment that encourages lifelong learning. “The Pike Township community is made richer by its cultural, ethnic, and economic diversity, and our location next to Pike High School presents a wonderful opportunity to serve students and families,” Jenkins said. “I’m excited to be part of this community and look forward to building relationships that foster lifelong learning and connection.”

The renovation project was shaped by input from local residents, gathered through community meetings and surveys conducted in early 2023. Architectural and design firms Luminaut and Four Point Design collaborated with library representatives to incorporate the community’s feedback into the final plans. The $2,275,000 project was funded through bonds approved by the Indianapolis City-County Council, ensuring that the Library’s debt service tax rate remains unaffected.

As the reopening date approaches, excitement is building for the Pike Branch’s fresh look and enhanced features. Library officials encourage community members to attend the celebration and explore all the new offerings. For additional details on the Pike Branch and its services, visit indypl.org.
