More IPS students gain access to Mentorship and Opportunity through DREAM Alive’s dedicated programs

Indianapolis, Indiana – DREAM Alive, a nonprofit dedicated to mentorship and youth development, continues to make a lasting impact on Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) students. Thanks to a successful $200,000 fundraising campaign, the organization will further strengthen its programs at Northwest, Longfellow, T.C. Howe, and Arlington middle schools. By focusing on mentorship, career development, and character building, DREAM Alive empowers vulnerable students and provides them with tools for success.

Founded in 2001 by former Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Tarik Glenn and his wife Maya, DREAM Alive initially aimed to create community centers in underserved areas. However, after partnering with IPS, the organization shifted its focus to direct mentorship, launching a structured, long-term program that supports students for seven years. The program’s goal is to guide students through middle and high school, equipping them with skills and connections for their future careers.

“When I see our scholars, I see myself—someone with dreams bigger than their circumstances,” Glenn said. “Mentorship expanded the path forward for me, and now, through DREAM Alive, we’re creating that same opportunity for thousands of kids. This fundraiser isn’t just about raising money; it’s about inspiring the priceless gift of hope.”

Community support plays a crucial role in DREAM Alive’s success. At the recent DREAM Makers Luncheon, the Indianapolis Colts and team owner Jim Irsay pledged a $100,000 matching gift to sustain and expand the program. This generous donation will allow DREAM Alive to reach even more students and provide them with life-changing opportunities.

“We’re honored to support DREAM Alive and the incredible work they’re doing to lift up the youth of Indianapolis,” Irsay said. “Our youth are our future, and every dollar we match invests in their potential. I’ve seen firsthand how mentorship can change lives, and I’m proud to stand with Tarik and DREAM Alive to help make a difference in our community.”

The impact of DREAM Alive extends beyond academics. The program has led to significant behavioral improvements among its scholars, with participants experiencing 91% fewer school suspensions compared to their peers. By fostering positive relationships and engagement in school, the program helps students stay on track for graduation and future success.

Since 2011, nearly 99% of DREAM Alive scholars have graduated high school, significantly surpassing the 72% average graduation rate over the same period. This achievement highlights the program’s effectiveness in keeping students motivated and prepared for their futures.

DREAM Alive scholars benefit from three key areas of development:

• Career-Focused Experiential Learning: Hands-on experiences introduce students to various career paths and help them build essential skills.
• Mentoring Relationships: Long-term mentorship provides students with guidance, encouragement, and stability.
• Character Development: Programs focus on leadership, responsibility, and goal setting to help students grow into confident and capable individuals.

“With partnerships across IPS, businesses, and the community, DREAM Alive remains committed to shaping the next generation of leaders in Indianapolis,” Glenn said.

Through its continued expansion and community support, DREAM Alive is creating a brighter future for students in IPS, ensuring they have the opportunities and mentorship needed to succeed.
