Monroe County, Indiana – The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) is taking a proactive step toward balancing socio-economic status across schools and ensuring cost-effectiveness by forming a Redistricting Study Commission. This new initiative invites community members, including parents, teachers, students, and staff, to take an active role in shaping the future of school district boundaries.
The commission’s establishment follows a series of Board of School Trustees meetings in which redistricting became a central focus. MCCSC is calling for volunteers who are part of the school district and willing to attend all scheduled meetings to ensure continuity in discussions. The meetings will take place on April 2, April 16, April 23, May 14, and May 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the location yet to be determined. Additional meetings may be scheduled as needed.
“The Redistricting Study Commission will play a crucial role in evaluating how we can balance socio-economic diversity in our schools while also considering cost-effectiveness,” said MCCSC officials. “Community involvement is key, as we want to ensure that all voices are heard and that any changes reflect the needs and concerns of those affected.”
The move to create the commission stems from several resolutions and board discussions over the past year. The process formally began on February 27, 2024, when the Board of School Trustees passed Resolution 2024-05, which initiated the study of attendance zone reconfiguration. This resolution called for expert guidance in demography, enrollment trends, and school districting to inform the process.
Further developments occurred in the months that followed. On October 22, 2024, the Board released its Commitments & Guiding Principles for Balancing Socioeconomic Status, reaffirming its dedication to creating a more equitable school environment. By December 17, 2024, the Board directed the Superintendent to ensure the redistricting study focused on two main priorities: achieving socio-economic balance across schools and optimizing financial resources.
The final step in launching the commission took place on February 25, 2025, when the Board officially announced its formation. Now, MCCSC is actively seeking community engagement, urging interested individuals to complete an application form by March 28 to participate.
Given the complexity of redistricting, the Board is enlisting experts to assist with demographic analysis and long-term planning. The study will consider factors such as school capacity, transportation logistics, and the potential impact on students and families.
Community members who join the commission will be tasked with reviewing data, discussing potential boundary changes, and providing input on how to best achieve the stated goals. MCCSC emphasizes that participation in all meetings is essential, as each session will build upon discussions from the previous one.
For those unable to join but interested in staying informed, MCCSC will provide updates at regular Board meetings and after each commission session. Residents can access the latest information or sign up for email notifications at mccsc.edu/redistricting.

The formation of this commission marks a significant step in MCCSC’s commitment to fostering equity and efficiency within the school district. With community input and expert analysis, the district aims to develop a redistricting plan that meets the needs of students, families, and staff while ensuring responsible use of resources.
