Bloomington, Indiana – A new rhythm of neighborhood life is taking shape at Hopewell Commons this summer, with fresh food, music and community activity returning to the center of Bloomington’s growing Hopewell neighborhood.

The weekday edition of the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market opens for the season on Tuesday, June 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hopewell Commons, 630 S. Morton St. More than a place to buy groceries, Tuesday Market is designed as a weekly gathering point where residents can meet local growers and food makers, pick up dinner, listen to music and spend time together outdoors.

That activity carries added meaning at Hopewell Commons, one of the regular public spaces being activated as the City continues redevelopment of the former hospital site and surrounding neighborhood.

The market arrives in a setting built for movement and connection, with a performance stage, seating areas, pickleball courts, ping pong tables and convenient access from the B-Line Trail. Visitors can arrive on foot or by bicycle, with bike racks available on both sides of the commons. Public transit access is also available through Bloomington Transit.

Each Tuesday through the summer, farm vendors will bring a changing selection of locally grown and locally made goods, including produce, meat, eggs, flowers and baked products. Prepared food vendors will also offer ready-to-eat meals made with local ingredients, giving visitors the option to shop for the week or simply settle in for an evening meal. Admission to the market is free.

For shoppers using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, Tuesday Market continues its effort to make local food easier to afford. Through the Double Market Bucks program, every $3 in SNAP benefits becomes $6 in Market Bucks. Those funds may be spent like cash on SNAP-eligible items offered by farm vendors throughout the market. Details about participation and redemption are available through the City’s SNAP benefits and Double Market Bucks information.

The opening market evening will also bring music to the commons. As part of Tuesday Tunes, included in the City’s summer Performing Arts Series of free music in parks, Don’t Call Me Betty will perform retro rock ’n’ roll from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on June 2. The full lineup is available on the City’s concerts, movies and plays schedule.

While the weekly market adds immediate energy to the site, larger changes are moving ahead nearby. Hopewell South, the first housing phase in the broader redevelopment effort, is advancing after receiving unanimous approval from the Bloomington Plan Commission and Common Council. The first 98 homes are moving toward groundbreaking in the coming months.

Another major piece of the neighborhood’s future is expected to arrive this summer. The Kohr Building, a former hospital building being converted by the City and the Bloomington Housing Authority, is planned to open with 38 income-restricted rental homes.

Together, those developments place Tuesday Market in the middle of a neighborhood in transition: a place where new homes are coming, familiar community traditions are returning and Hopewell Commons is becoming an active public destination, one Tuesday evening at a time.
