University of Indianapolis celebrates all six engineering programs earning full ABET accreditation after rigorous review

Indianapolis, Indiana – The University of Indianapolis has marked a major milestone in its academic journey, announcing that every one of its engineering bachelor’s degree programs has now earned accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. This recognition places the R.B. Annis School of Engineering among a select group of institutions whose programs meet global standards for preparing graduates to enter some of the world’s most critical and demanding technical fields.

The newly accredited programs include computer engineering, electrical engineering, and general engineering. These programs join industrial and systems engineering, mechanical engineering, and software engineering, which had already received accreditation in earlier reviews. Together, the achievement means that all six undergraduate engineering programs at UIndy now carry the full seal of approval from ABET, a nonprofit organization that has become the benchmark for quality assurance in technical education worldwide.

For students, graduates, and employers alike, the accreditation offers a clear signal that the university’s programs are built on strong foundations of excellence. ABET accreditation ensures that the curriculum, faculty, facilities, and institutional support align with industry expectations and that graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to innovate and contribute responsibly to society.

“I am extremely pleased to announce this exciting news to our students, our faculty, our graduates and the business community,” said Dr. Ken Reid, associate dean at the R.B. Annis School of Engineering. “Based on the practical learning and experiential education facilitated by our innovative DesignSpine curriculum, I believe our program is one of the strongest in the nation. It is rare for an institution to have multiple programs earn full accreditation on its inaugural visit—and we are six for six.”

The DesignSpine curriculum referenced by Reid has become a defining feature of UIndy’s engineering programs. It emphasizes practical, hands-on learning experiences that mimic real-world design and problem-solving environments. Students move beyond theoretical coursework and take part in industry-inspired projects from their first year onward. The approach has gained national attention for the way it blends creativity with technical precision and prepares students to lead in rapidly changing industries.

University President Tanuja Singh underscored the significance of the recognition for the campus community and future graduates. “The ABET accreditation is a strong validation of the quality of our programs, faculty and staff,” Singh said. “Past, present and future students can be confident knowing that they are well prepared for an exciting and fulfilling career solving a wide variety of problems.”

Globally, ABET accreditation is regarded as one of the most trusted marks of quality in the technical disciplines. The process is voluntary, yet universities pursue it because of the assurance it provides to students, employers, and communities. Reviews are conducted through rigorous peer evaluation by professionals with backgrounds in academia, industry, and government. They examine not only the courses and learning outcomes but also how effectively a program prepares its graduates to meet the challenges of safety, ethics, and innovation in their chosen fields.

As of October 2024, ABET accredits nearly 4,800 programs at 930 institutions in 41 countries and regions. That reach makes its stamp of approval a recognized credential no matter where UIndy graduates go on to work or continue their studies. Accreditation is retroactive, meaning that even alumni who completed their degrees before this announcement will now benefit from the recognition.

The UIndy engineering programs are officially accredited through September 30, 2028. The university is already preparing for the next review cycle, scheduled for fall 2027, when ABET will once again evaluate the programs against its evolving standards.

Behind the achievement lies years of planning and investment. Since its creation, the R.B. Annis School of Engineering has sought to position itself as a leader in innovative, student-centered education. Faculty members have worked to develop courses that not only meet technical requirements but also encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and communication—skills that employers consistently rank as essential.

The ABET review committee considered these factors alongside the school’s facilities and resources. Laboratories, design studios, and collaborative spaces were assessed to ensure that students have access to the tools and environments needed to thrive in modern engineering practice. Institutional support was also examined, reflecting the university’s commitment to sustaining the programs over time.

While the accreditation represents a validation of past and current efforts, UIndy officials emphasize that it is also a promise for the future. Accreditation must be maintained, and with rapid advances in fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and biomedical technology, engineering programs cannot stand still. By combining ABET standards with the innovative spirit of the DesignSpine curriculum, UIndy aims to continue producing graduates who are adaptable, creative, and ready to make a difference.

For students considering their options in engineering education, the message is clear: the University of Indianapolis now offers a fully accredited path across six distinct disciplines, all designed to prepare them for both the technical and human challenges of the profession. For employers and industry partners, it signals a talent pipeline grounded in quality, rigor, and real-world experience.

The university invites prospective students and community members to learn more about its programs and approach to engineering education. More information about the R.B. Annis School of Engineering, its curriculum, and the ABET accreditation process can be found on the UIndy engineering website, while details about ABET and its criteria are available at www.abet.org.
