Generous IU Health grant helps Beacon Inc expand support for homeless and vulnerable communities

Bloomington, Indiana – Members of IU Health and Beacon, Inc. gathered in February to mark a major milestone in their ongoing efforts to support those facing extreme poverty in Monroe County. The event celebrated a substantial $650,000 grant from IU Health, which will directly aid Beacon, Inc. in its mission to provide shelter, resources, and hope to those in need.

The grant, which will be distributed over a two-year period, will fund vital renovations at Beacon, Inc., including permanent supportive housing, an emergency overnight shelter, and a resource center. This center will offer co-located services in partnership with other community organizations, specifically aimed at helping individuals struggling with severe mental illness and substance use disorder.

“The work that we do in the hospital is important, but it’s a small part of what our folks in the community need,” said IU Health South Region President Denzil Ross. “We’re happy that we could provide support for Beacon’s great work in the community and their growth.”

Beacon, Inc. has long been a cornerstone in Monroe County, providing essential services to those experiencing homelessness and hunger. With the additional funding, the organization aims to expand its impact and create a more sustainable model of support for vulnerable individuals in the region.

“We are so grateful to the IU Health Foundation for their trust and commitment to the new Beacon Center,” said Beacon, Inc. Executive Director Forrest Gilmore. “Together, we will create a place of hope and home that will help every person reach their highest potential.”

This funding comes from the Indiana University Health Foundation’s $200 million Community Impact Investment Fund (CIIF). The CIIF is designed to address critical social and environmental factors that influence health outcomes. The IU Health Foundation administers yearly grants from the earnings generated by the fund’s invested capital, ensuring that resources continue to be directed toward meaningful community initiatives.

By supporting Beacon, Inc., IU Health continues to recognize that healthcare extends beyond hospital walls. Addressing social determinants such as housing stability, mental health support, and food security plays a crucial role in improving overall well-being.

The collaboration between IU Health and Beacon, Inc. is a powerful example of how healthcare institutions and nonprofit organizations can work together to drive meaningful change. As renovations and program expansions move forward, Monroe County residents facing hardship will soon have more accessible and comprehensive support.

The grant represents not only financial assistance but also a broader commitment to fostering long-term solutions for the community’s most vulnerable. With a shared vision of creating a healthier, more inclusive society, IU Health and Beacon, Inc. continue to lead the way in addressing urgent social challenges.
