Bloomington, Indiana – The Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) of the City of Bloomington is preparing to hold its fifth annual Black Male Youth Summit in an effort to empower and uplifts young Black men. Targeted for middle and high school kids, the event is scheduled for Thursday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall, at 401 N. Morton St., Bloomington, IN.
Themed “Elements of Empowerment: Using Black Excellence to Elevate Self/Community,” the summit aims to honor and magnify the good influence of Black young men in their spheres. The day-long event will not only celebrate their successes but also promote a conversation on their indispensable contribution to the growth of communities.
The summit this year features a remarkable slate of speakers who are leaders in their domains and shining lights of success and resiliency. Noted for his contributions to the Black Studies Movement at Indiana University Bloomington, Dr. Dhakir Mubarak Abdullah will offer a perspective on academic empowerment. Joining him will be Frederick Yeakey, Chief Partnership Officer at Providence Cristo Rey High School, who will talk about approaches for educational success and community involvement, and Corey Andrews, a Regional Vice President who supports financial literacy.
The summit promises an immersive experience including many seminars meant to develop personal development and leadership abilities. Along with a free pizza lunch, attendees will have lots of chances to network with community leaders and colleagues, therefore creating a forum for important relationships.
Students registering for the summit will be excused from school to attend this educational event under a unique arrangement with the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC). This cooperation emphasizes the dedication of the community to personal and educational growth outside the conventional classroom environment.
Although pre-registration is required and must be finished by Tuesday, September 10, summit attendance is free of cost. Interested parties may register on the city’s dedicated page online.
