Indianapolis, Indiana – Etchings Magazine, the student-run literary publication at the University of Indianapolis, has received national recognition from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA). Issues 36.1 and 36.2 of the magazine were honored as first-place winners in the ASPA’s prestigious annual contest for 2024.
Etchings Magazine is an integral part of the university’s English program, managed by students enrolled in ENGL 379 and ENGL 580. The publication process involves selecting writing and art submissions from students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Through these courses, students gain hands-on experience in editing, designing, and publishing a literary magazine, preparing them for future careers in publishing and the literary arts.
Liz Whiteacre, associate professor of English and co-advisor of Etchings Press, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments and their national recognition.
“We are proud that the work students did last year in ENGL 379: Etchings Magazine was recognized and honored nationally,” said Whiteacre. “There is a lot of talent at UIndy, and our literary fine arts magazine is an excellent opportunity to showcase it and offer students an experience in publishing that prepares them for their futures.”
The achievement highlights the dedication and creativity of the students who contribute to and manage the magazine. The recognition from ASPA serves as validation of the hard work put into each issue and further solidifies the University of Indianapolis as a hub for literary excellence.
