Indianapolis, Indiana – United Way of South Central Indiana has announced an impressive success in its 2025 Free Community Tax Service program, which has helped local residents recover more than $1 million in tax refunds and credits. This financial stability initiative, led by a dedicated team of volunteers and community partners, is making a significant impact on individuals and families throughout the region.
In 2025, the program was able to assist 851 federal tax filers, helping them reclaim a total of $1,047,364 in federal refunds and credits. Thanks to the hard work of 78 IRS-certified volunteers, the initiative saved local taxpayers an estimated $212,750 in tax preparation fees. For many, the refunds have proven to be crucial in meeting essential needs, such as food, clothing, transportation, medical care, and even savings.
“The Free Community Tax Service is about more than just numbers—it’s about empowering our neighbors,” said Randy Rogers, President & CEO of United Way of South Central Indiana. “These refunds can be life-changing for individuals and families living paycheck to paycheck. We’re grateful to the volunteers and partners who made this impact possible.”
The success of the program comes from the collaboration between United Way and a broad network of community organizations. Volunteers dedicate their time and expertise each year to ensure that families and individuals, especially those in underserved and rural areas, have access to free tax preparation services. According to Carmen Chamorro Avilés, United Way’s Community Impact Manager, “What our volunteers do can’t be overstated. They come back each year with the skills and heart to help others, and because of that, our neighbors gain a real opportunity for financial stability and peace of mind.”
The 2025 tax season saw some notable trends that highlight the importance of the program. A significant portion of the filers, 37%, were living below the federal poverty line. Additionally, 15% of the returns claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), amounting to $249,796 in refunds. The Child Tax Credit also played a pivotal role, returning $112,097 to working families.
The program also supported a notably older demographic, with 64% of the clients being aged 60 or older, and 16% being 75 or older. Despite these figures, the average adjusted gross income for households served was only $29,492, reflecting the financial hardships many local families face.
The Free Community Tax Service operated in seven full-service tax sites across Monroe, Owen, and Brown counties. This service was further complemented by two additional locations operated by AARP. Clients came from all corners of Monroe County and the surrounding areas, including rural communities where access to free tax preparation services can be scarce.
In addition to the tax service, the United Way’s broader financial stability strategy aims to further support residents by connecting them to long-term solutions. Programs such as the Bank On Bloomington initiative and the Financial Stability Alliance are integral parts of this approach. Together, these efforts focus on building financial security, ensuring that people have the resources and knowledge to manage their finances effectively.
The Free Community Tax Service is a significant component of this mission. Through partnerships with local organizations, United Way is able to offer resources and support to a wide range of residents. In addition to the United Way of South Central Indiana and the Financial Stability Alliance, a host of other partners helped make this program possible. These include 2-1-1, AARP, Area 10 Agency on Aging, Endwright Center East, Brown County Public Library, City of Bloomington, First Financial Bank, Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Ivy Tech Community College–Bloomington, MCCSC Broadview Adult Learning, Monroe County Public Library, Owen County Public Library, and many dedicated community volunteers.
The success of the Free Community Tax Service underscores United Way of South Central Indiana’s commitment to empowering local communities and ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to build financial stability. By offering this crucial service, United Way is not only helping individuals and families with immediate tax needs but also providing a foundation for long-term financial well-being.
The continued success of this initiative demonstrates the power of community collaboration and the importance of accessible financial services for all. As the program looks forward to future tax seasons, it remains a cornerstone of United Way’s work to support residents and build a brighter, more secure future for everyone in the region.
