Greensburg, Indiana – The Rebekah Trail Extension in Greensburg officially opened on July 16, marking a significant milestone for the community’s outdoor infrastructure and connectivity. The extension, which adds 0.43 miles of new asphalt trail, enhances the local trail network by linking several key locations within the city, including Rebekah Park, Pirate Park, and the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library.
This new stretch of trail is part of a larger effort to make the city more walkable and connected. The existing trail already connects Greensburg Elementary School, Greensburg High School, athletic fields, and residential neighborhoods, offering a comprehensive route for locals and visitors alike. Additionally, a future project funded by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will extend the trail along State Road 46/Main Street, providing a pathway into downtown Greensburg.
The Rebekah Trail Extension project was made possible through the combined efforts of the city of Greensburg and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The city received a generous $417,818 grant from the DNR’s dedicated trail funding program, which is designed to support trail development across the state. This extension is the first of 14 projects funded by round 4 trail grants, which were awarded in December 2023. As of now, it stands as one of the many new and exciting additions to Indiana’s expanding trail system.
“The extension of the Rebekah Trail provides an important connection in Greensburg for people to get outside and connect with both their community and each other,” said Dale Brier, deputy director of community grants and trails for Indiana State Parks. “DNR is proud to be part of making this trail extension possible.”
The trail extension is part of a larger initiative to create more interconnected trail systems throughout Indiana. The DNR has led the largest infusion of trails funding in state history, contributing $180 million in dedicated funding to support the development of trails that enhance local mobility and promote outdoor activity. Since the program’s inception, 45 of the 89 trail projects funded by the DNR have been completed, and an additional 22 projects are currently under construction. With over 134 miles of new trails built, the initiative is transforming the way Hoosiers interact with their communities and the outdoors.
For Greensburg, the opening of the Rebekah Trail Extension is an exciting development that not only improves the city’s walkability but also provides a safe and scenic route for residents to enjoy. As more trail projects like this one are completed, the vision of a more connected, healthier, and active state continues to take shape.
