Indiana State Police investigating officer-involved shooting after suspect fires at police with a child in vehicle

New Haven, Indiana – The Indiana State Police (ISP) has launched an investigation into a police-involved shooting that occurred during a weekend traffic stop, which involved a 1-year-old child being in the suspect’s vehicle at the time.

The incident unfolded on June 28 at approximately 8:30 a.m. when a New Haven Police Department officer attempted to pull over a vehicle near the intersection of Maplecrest Road and State Road 930. The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Delshawn Young, initially complied with the officer’s attempt to stop the vehicle, but things quickly escalated when Young reportedly fired shots at the officer.

According to ISP, the officer returned fire, though fortunately, Young was not struck during the exchange. The situation became even more concerning when it was revealed that Young had a 1-year-old child inside the vehicle with him at the time of the shooting. New Haven Police Chief James Krueger confirmed the presence of the child, but stated that Young had dropped off the child in the midst of the ensuing pursuit.

The pursuit continued as Young fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase. In an effort to bring the dangerous situation to a halt, an ISP trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, which successfully stopped the vehicle and allowed for Young’s arrest. Despite the tense and chaotic events, no injuries were reported in either the shooting, the police chase, or the PIT maneuver.

Delshawn Young was taken into custody without further incident. At the time of the incident, Young had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, and he now faces multiple charges. He has been preliminarily charged with 11 offenses, including attempted murder, neglect of a dependent, violating probation, and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the ISP continuing to review evidence and conduct interviews. The department’s involvement is standard procedure in situations involving police use of force, ensuring an independent and thorough investigation.

The case has drawn attention not only due to the nature of the violent exchange but also because of the child’s involvement. Local authorities have emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for actions that endanger both law enforcement and the community, especially when a child’s safety is compromised.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities are working to piece together the details of what led to the violent confrontation and the role the child played in the chaotic events. The community remains on edge, with many awaiting further updates on the case. For now, the ISP is focused on ensuring a complete and transparent investigation into the actions that transpired in New Haven earlier this week.

Young remains in custody, facing serious charges that could have significant legal consequences. The investigation is expected to take some time, and officials are urging the public to stay tuned for further updates.
