Bloomington, Indiana – A generous donation from the Duke Energy Foundation has enabled Hoosier Hills Food Bank (HHFB) to purchase 26,000 jars of peanut butter, a significant boost for the organization’s ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity in Southern Indiana. The $28,000 grant, delivered just in time to meet the growing needs in the community, will help feed thousands of individuals and families in Brown, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange, and Owen counties.
The truck carrying the peanut butter arrived at the food bank today, ready to be distributed among the 85 partner agencies that work closely with HHFB. The peanut butter, a highly sought-after source of protein, will be made available to local food pantries, shelters, and other organizations serving those in need over the next several months.
“We’re really grateful to Duke Energy Foundation for making this purchase possible,” said Julio Alonso, Executive Director of Hoosier Hills Food Bank. “Peanut butter is a high demand source of protein, great for kids’ programs and versatile since it is ready to eat. Food insecurity is at its highest levels in a decade and we’ve experienced cuts in government commodities, so the ability to purchase nutritious food is crucial right now.”
With food insecurity on the rise, especially amid ongoing economic challenges, the ability to provide high-quality, nutritious options like peanut butter is vital. Peanut butter is not only cost-effective but also an essential pantry staple due to its long shelf life and ease of use, making it an ideal choice for those facing hunger.
The Duke Energy Foundation’s donation comes at a critical time, as food banks across the nation are feeling the strain of increased demand and reduced resources. In particular, government commodities, which have traditionally supported food banks, have been cut, making private donations and corporate partnerships even more vital to ensuring that communities receive the support they need.
Liz Irwin, Duke Energy’s Government and Community Relations Manager, was on hand to witness the arrival of the donation at the food bank. “The Duke Energy Foundation has been a long-time supporter of Hoosier Hills Food Bank and the important work they do,” Irwin remarked. “We appreciate the positive impact the organization has made to address food insecurity for the most vulnerable populations in our region and are glad we can help.”
The peanut butter shipment represents just one of many collaborative efforts between Duke Energy and Hoosier Hills Food Bank. For years, the foundation has worked alongside the food bank to support initiatives aimed at alleviating hunger and improving the lives of those facing food insecurity in Southern Indiana.
As the food bank prepares to distribute the jars to its network of partners, the support from the Duke Energy Foundation ensures that families in need will have access to vital, nutritious food. With the demand for food assistance expected to remain high, the continued partnership between Duke Energy and Hoosier Hills Food Bank will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the community.
For those looking to get involved, HHFB encourages local residents to consider donating or volunteering as the food bank works to meet the growing need in the region. The generous donation from the Duke Energy Foundation has already made a tangible difference, and with the ongoing support of community partners, HHFB is poised to continue making strides in the fight against hunger.
