Indiana – As the Indiana State Fair kicks off on August 1, visitors will once again have the chance to explore the wild side of summer with an exciting lineup from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). From live animal shows to hands-on activities, the DNR’s presence at the fair promises to be a highlight for families, outdoor lovers, and curious minds of all ages. The fair runs through August 17 and is closed on Mondays.
Leading the DNR’s annual effort is Coni Hudson, director of special projects, who assures guests that the department’s exhibits are designed to entertain, educate, and inspire.
“We have something to offer nature lovers at every level,” she said.
The DNR Building and surrounding areas will be packed with displays, demonstrations, and interactive fun. Experts will be available to answer questions about everything from wildlife to conservation efforts. Visitors can stop by and chat with Indiana Conservation Officers about hunting, fishing, and state park rules, or simply to hear stories from the field.

A fan-favorite spot is the DNR backyard amphitheater, where guests can enjoy live animal encounters. Every morning, a live reptile show will showcase fascinating creatures and their unique behaviors. In the late afternoon, the spotlight shifts to the skies with a thrilling birds of prey show. These daily presentations not only entertain but also help build appreciation for Indiana’s native species.
Another must-see area is the Fishin’ Pond, where kids ages 5 to 17 can try their luck at casting a line. The fishing is free and offered Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 4 to 7 p.m., and also on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. It’s a great way for kids to learn a new skill, or just enjoy the simple joy of fishing.
Butterfly gardens will add color and calm to the outdoor exhibits, where families can stroll among fluttering wings and blooming plants. And just steps away, display ponds full of native fish will offer another up-close look at Indiana’s aquatic life.
Inside the DNR Building, visitors can interact with a working floodplain model and stop by the invasive species booth to learn about the plants and animals threatening local ecosystems. Staff will be on hand to share tips on how Hoosiers can help protect the state’s natural resources, starting in their own backyards.
One of the most anticipated special events of the fair is Natural & Cultural History Day, taking place on August 14. This themed day will include a range of commemorative activities and interactive displays that celebrate Indiana’s environment and heritage.
“This is an excellent opportunity for families and individuals of all ages to connect with Indiana’s past and its vibrant natural world,” Hudson said.
Attendees will be invited to dig into history with simulated archaeological digs, bowl for geodes, and marvel at Indiana’s fossil record. It’s a fun, educational way to spark curiosity about the state’s geological and cultural roots.
Beyond the exhibits and live shows, visitors can also stop by Mother Nature’s Mercantile, the DNR’s fair store. Open daily, the shop will sell outdoor-themed apparel, keepsakes, and gear. Fairgoers can also purchase annual state park entrance passes or sign up for a subscription to Outdoor Indiana magazine. Those who subscribe at the fair will receive the current issue on the spot, perfect for flipping through while resting under a shady tree.
Whether you’re planning a full day at the fair or just stopping in for a few hours, the DNR’s section offers a great mix of fun, discovery, and natural beauty. It’s a reminder of how much Indiana’s great outdoors has to offer—and how we all play a role in preserving it.
