Congressman Jim Baird speaks out on the shooting of West Virginia National Guardsmen in Washington D.C. and urges prayers for their recovery and families

Indiana – Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) expressed deep concern today following the shooting of two West Virginia National Guardsmen in the nation’s capital. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through military and civilian communities alike, prompted Baird to release a statement urging support and prayers for the victims and their families.

“I was devastated to hear about the two West Virginia National Guardsmen who were senselessly shot in Washington, D.C., today. I ask everyone to join me in praying for the soldiers and their families. This attack on these Guardsmen is horrific and unacceptable. The men and women of our National Guard selflessly serve our country and have worked hard to make our nation’s capital safer for every American. Our prayers are with the Guardsmen, their units, and their families during this time. I thank the first responders and law enforcement officers for their quick response, and I hope the perpetrator is brought to swift justice.”

The attack highlights the ongoing risks faced by members of the National Guard, who serve both domestically and abroad. Guardsmen often operate in high-pressure environments to protect public safety, yet incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that can occur even on U.S. soil.

Baird’s statement also acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement and first responders who arrived quickly at the scene. While details about the perpetrator and motives remain under investigation, authorities are working to ensure swift accountability.

The Congressman emphasized the importance of community support during this time, noting the role of collective prayers and solidarity in helping the victims’ families cope with the trauma. “Our prayers are with the Guardsmen, their units, and their families during this time,” he said, underlining the human cost of the violent act.

Their service, often overlooked, is critical to national safety, and incidents like this bring renewed attention to the sacrifices made by these servicemembers.

Congressman Baird’s response reflects a broader call for vigilance and care for those who serve, highlighting both the bravery of the National Guard and the shared responsibility of Americans to support them in times of crisis.
