Bloomington, Indiana – A community leadership panel will convene in Bloomington on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, to address the potential local impacts of Senate Bill 1 (SB1), a piece of legislation originally aimed at providing tax relief for homeowners. The discussion, taking place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Monroe Convention Center, will bring together local leaders, business representatives, and community members to explore the potential consequences of recent changes to the bill and its effect on the region.
The event, which is nonpartisan, is designed to educate Bloomington and Monroe County residents, stakeholders, and members of the media on how SB1 might impact municipalities, schools, and public services. While the bill was initially introduced with the goal of easing the financial burden on homeowners through property tax relief, changes to the legislation in recent months have raised concerns about its long-term effects on funding for essential public services.
City of Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson, who is organizing the panel in collaboration with leaders from Monroe County and local economic development sectors, is set to lead the conversation. “With recent updates to SB1, it’s important for our community to come together and understand what these changes could mean for our schools, infrastructure, and local economy,” said Mayor Thomson.
The panel will include a range of voices from key local organizations. Among those joining Mayor Thomson will be Eric Reedy and Tim Stricker from Reedy Financial Group, Hopi Stosberg, President of the Bloomington City Council, Eric Spoonmore from the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, Jen Pearl from the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation, Jody Madeira, Monroe County Commissioner, and Talisha Coppock of Downtown Bloomington, Inc.
“We want to ensure that all community members have access to the information they need to understand how SB1 could affect them,” said Reedy, noting that the event aims to foster open discussion and answer pressing questions. “The changes in SB1 could impact the tax base and local funding in ways that many may not realize yet.”
Recent property tax bills have sparked growing public interest, as residents begin to see firsthand the potential impacts of the new legislation. As the changes to SB1 begin to take shape, there are concerns that the reduction in property tax revenue could have a lasting effect on public services, such as education, emergency services, and infrastructure maintenance.
In addition to providing a platform for local officials and community leaders to discuss these issues, the event will also allow for an open dialogue between the panelists and the audience. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns about how the bill could affect Bloomington and Monroe County.
This community panel is a critical opportunity for residents to better understand the long-term ramifications of SB1 on their daily lives. The panel’s discussion will provide valuable insights as Bloomington and Monroe County navigate the evolving landscape of property tax reform and its effects on public services and local government.
For those interested in attending, the panel will be held in the Rogers Room of the Monroe Convention Center, located at 302 S. College Avenue. Onsite parking will be available at the venue. The event is open to all residents, stakeholders, and members of the media.
