Bloomington, Indiana – The City of Bloomington is inviting local artists to contribute to an exciting new public art initiative, “Ride and Thrive.” This project seeks creative designs for six new bus stop shelters set to be installed in 2025. Bloomington-based artists and artist teams aged 18 and over are encouraged to submit nature-themed artwork that will enhance the visual appeal of the shelters while promoting environmental awareness.
The new bus stop shelters aim to provide much-needed protection from the sun and rain for residents waiting for public transportation. As climate change continues to bring longer, hotter summers and more extreme weather, these shelters will serve as a vital resource for the community. In addition to their practical purpose, the shelters will help encourage the use of public transit, which plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a more sustainable city.

To celebrate the region’s natural beauty and biodiversity, the City of Bloomington is incorporating art into the design of these shelters. The selected artworks will be placed along the top borders of the shelters, creating a visually compelling experience for commuters and passersby alike. This initiative highlights the talent of local artists while reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainability and public engagement.
Artists whose designs are chosen will receive an honorarium of $500 per selected design. The City of Bloomington will cover all costs associated with materials, printing, and installation. This ensures that the artists’ work is showcased in a way that is both professional and durable, making a lasting impact on the city’s landscape.
The deadline for design submissions is 11:59 PM EST on Friday, March 21. All applications must be submitted through Civiform. Interested artists can find the full call for designs under the Application Overview, where detailed submission guidelines and project specifications are available.
By integrating art into public spaces, Bloomington continues to champion creative expression while enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The Ride and Thrive project represents a fusion of functionality, sustainability, and artistic vision, making public transportation not just a necessity but an experience. Bloomington residents can look forward to a more vibrant and climate-resilient city as these bus shelters become part of the community’s daily life.
