Bloomington, Indiana – In a major boost for local infrastructure, the City of Bloomington, Monroe County, and the towns of Ellettsville and Stinesville have secured more than $3.7 million in funding to carry out key roadway and safety upgrades across the region.
The funding, sourced from both federal and state programs, will support a wide range of projects aimed at making travel safer and more accessible for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The grants come through two highly competitive channels—the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossings Matching Grant program.
Local officials are hailing the investment as a clear win for residents and a sign that collaboration and persistence are paying off.
“These are the kinds of wins residents deserve to hear about,” said Mayor Kerry Thomson. “They demonstrate that we are leveraging outside resources to improve local infrastructure, expand access, and increase safety—without asking more from local taxpayers.”
Each community will use its share of the funding to tackle specific priorities. Projects may include sidewalk improvements, upgraded intersections, safer crosswalks, and repaving of worn-out roads—all designed to reduce accidents and enhance everyday mobility for people of all ages.
Officials from Monroe County and the towns involved emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in securing these funds. By working together and presenting strong applications, the municipalities were able to maximize their chances of success and bring in significant outside resources that might not have been available otherwise.
The awarded grants reflect a broader effort across Indiana to invest in infrastructure that meets both current needs and future growth. The Community Crossings program, in particular, helps local governments match state funds with their own contributions, making it easier to tackle costly but necessary upgrades.
With construction expected to begin in the coming months, residents across Bloomington, Monroe County, Ellettsville, and Stinesville can look forward to safer, more reliable roads—thanks to this major infusion of support.
