Indianapolis, Indiana – Recognition at the national level does not come often for a task force built around the difficult, detail-heavy work of tracing crime guns and connecting violent incidents. Last week, several Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives assigned to the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force received one of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ highest honors.
The National ATF Distinguished Service Medal was presented to members of the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force, or ICGTF, for work that officials said reflected outstanding performance, leadership and dedication in critical law enforcement duties. The award places a national spotlight on a partnership that has spent the past several years focused on violent crime and illegal firearms trafficking across central Indiana.

The task force was created in 2021 and brings together federal, state and local law enforcement officers and analysts from multiple central Indiana agencies. Its members also work alongside the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, combining investigative resources with forensic support as cases develop.
That structure is central to how the ICGTF operates. Rather than limiting investigations to one agency or jurisdiction, the task force is designed to pool information, expertise and investigative tools. Its work includes efforts to locate suspects, identify evidence tied to violent crimes and investigate the illegal possession and movement of firearms.
Officials said the Distinguished Service Medal reflects the group’s broader effort to disrupt the flow of illegal guns into the hands of criminals. The recognition also highlights the role of cooperation among federal, state and local partners, particularly in investigations that can cross jurisdictional lines or require several agencies to work from the same evidence.
“This recognition reflects an extraordinary level of dedication, leadership, and commitment to the mission of the ATF”, the department said in a release.
“The ATF Distinguished Service Medal honors the members of the ICGTF whose exceptional service and performance in carrying out critical law enforcement responsibilities have made a lasting impact. This award is a testament to the professionalism, perseverance, and unwavering commitment demonstrated in service to our communities and enhancing public safety.”

The medal is intended for individuals who demonstrate exceptionally meritorious service to the ATF mission through strong performance, leadership and dedication. In the case of the ICGTF, officials pointed to the task force’s work targeting violent crime and illegal firearms trafficking, as well as the sustained coordination required to carry out those investigations.
Since its launch, the ICGTF has relied on a comprehensive approach rather than a single investigative method. The task force uses what officials describe as innovative strategies to connect evidence, identify suspects and support investigations involving violent offenses and illegal gun possession.
For the IMPD detectives recognized last week, the award marks a national acknowledgment of work that is often carried out through long investigations and cooperation behind the scenes. For the task force itself, the recognition reinforces the model it was created to follow in 2021: agencies sharing resources, intelligence and expertise to pursue the people responsible for violent crime and illegal firearms activity.
That mission remains ongoing. The ICGTF continues to work with its federal, state and local partners, combining investigative and forensic efforts aimed at reducing violent crime and disrupting illegal firearms trafficking across the communities they serve.
