Bloomington, Indiana – Bloomington drivers are about to feel the city’s summer construction season in a very direct way: through detours, orange signs and a few carefully timed road closures.

The City of Bloomington has announced a series of temporary closures in late June and July 2026, with work affecting portions of Grimes Lane/Patterson Drive, College Avenue and Walnut Street. Some of the closures are tied to city-led infrastructure improvements, while others are connected to private development projects already moving forward in town. The city says the schedule has been coordinated to reduce disruption as much as possible while keeping access open for residents, businesses and emergency vehicles.

The most central city project will take place on Grimes Lane/Patterson Drive, where the road will close between Rogers Street and Walnut Street from June 29 through July 13. The work is being done to support infrastructure improvements, and First Street will serve as the main detour route during that period.

That closure will not cut off nearby destinations, but access will shift as work moves along the corridor. From June 29 to July 6, Grimes Lane will be closed west of the northernmost Switchyard Park entrance. During that first phase, the park entrance will remain reachable from Walnut Street. From July 6 to July 13, the closure will move east of that same entrance, and drivers will be able to reach it from Rogers Street. The city says local access to Switchyard Park, the bus depot, nearby businesses and nearby homes will be maintained throughout the work.

A longer closure is planned on College Avenue, where the section between Third Street and Smith Avenue will close from June 30 through July 24. That closure is connected to the Bloomington Convention Center expansion. Rogers Street, expected to reopen June 26 between Second and Third streets, will become the main detour route. Local access will remain available from Smith Avenue and nearby alleyways, while Convention Center parking will still be reachable from Madison Street and Smith Avenue.

Another closure is planned farther north on Walnut Street, between 17th Street and 19th Street. That work is expected to begin on or after June 29 and last about two weeks. The closure is needed for utility upgrades tied to “Hub 2,” a new housing development under construction. Dunn Street will serve as the primary detour, and the city says local access to all adjacent properties will remain in place.

For Bloomington, the closures are part inconvenience, part investment. Streets are being closed not simply to block traffic, but to allow crews to work on the pieces of the city that usually sit below the surface or behind construction fencing. The city’s Engineering Department is working with contractors, utility providers and public safety officials as the projects move forward.

Drivers can check the city’s road closure and construction information through Bloomington’s InRoads system. In the meantime, city officials are urging motorists to slow down, watch for posted signs and use caution near construction zones.
