Bloomington, Indiana – A powerful winter storm sweeping across Central Indiana over the weekend has forced widespread changes to the school schedule in the Bloomington area, leading to multiple closures and shifts to online learning for Monday, Jan. 26.
School officials across several counties announced cancellations and delays as snow, ice, and hazardous road conditions made travel unsafe for students, teachers, and staff. Families were notified through social media posts and email messages sent directly to parents, many of them late Sunday as the storm continued to move through the region.
In Monroe County, the Monroe County Community School Corporation announced a full closure for Monday, citing concerns over road safety and weather conditions. Several neighboring districts followed suit, opting either to close entirely or transition to virtual instruction for the day.
Brown County Schools reported that all schools would be closed, but students are expected to participate in an eLearning day. Eastern Greene Schools also canceled in-person classes, moving instead to a synchronous virtual learning day, allowing students to follow their regular schedules online.
The Bloomfield School District made a similar decision, closing buildings while conducting a synchronous eLearning day to maintain instructional continuity. MSD of Shakamak likewise announced a closure with plans for students to take part in synchronous eLearning from home.
Several independent and private schools in the Bloomington area also adjusted their schedules. Seven Oaks Classical School, The Project School, and Harmony School each announced full closures for Monday. Ivy Tech Bloomington reported that its campus would be closed to in-person activity but would continue operating virtually, ensuring that classes and services remain accessible online.
School leaders emphasized that the decisions were made with safety as the top priority, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding road conditions and continued weather impacts. Snow accumulation, icy surfaces, and reduced visibility were reported across much of Central Indiana, making early-morning travel especially risky.
Parents and students are encouraged to monitor official school communication channels for updates, especially as conditions may change throughout the day. Districts also reminded families to check individual teacher instructions for virtual learning expectations where applicable.
As cleanup efforts continue and weather conditions improve, schools are expected to reassess plans for the remainder of the week. For now, officials say flexibility and caution remain essential as the region recovers from one of the more disruptive winter storms of the season.
