Wheeler Mission – Bloomington launches ambitious campaign aimed at enhancing shelter facilities and expanding life-changing services for the homeless

Bloomington, Indiana – In a groundbreaking move to combat homelessness in South-Central Indiana, Wheeler Mission—Bloomington has launched its “Transforming Lives, Building Hope” comprehensive campaign. This ambitious initiative is aimed at not only improving the shelter facilities but also expanding the crucial services offered to men experiencing homelessness in the region. As the largest homeless shelter provider in the area, Wheeler Mission recognizes the urgent need for a transformation that will provide safety, stability, and long-term support for those who seek refuge.

The core of the campaign is to create an environment that fosters both immediate relief and future opportunities for the men Wheeler Mission serves. The organization’s goal is to upgrade its current campus on Westplex Avenue, strengthening emergency shelter services and providing more comprehensive, long-term program offerings. With a community-driven approach, the campaign will include facility improvements, expanded service areas, and the creation of new spaces for collaboration with community partners.

A Vision for a Comprehensive Support System

“We are committed to doing more than just providing a roof over someone’s head,” said Dana Jones, Director of Community Engagement and Services at Wheeler Mission—Bloomington. “It’s about empowering our guests with the skills and resources they need to move forward in life—work readiness, life skills, and the stability they need to succeed.” Through the Transforming Lives, Building Hope campaign, Wheeler Mission aims to provide men not only with shelter but also with tools for self-sufficiency, giving them the opportunity to build a future of health and stability.

One of the main priorities of the campaign is to address critical safety and security concerns that have become increasingly evident due to the high volume of individuals Wheeler Mission serves. The shelter will implement perimeter fencing, establish a secure welcome center, and introduce controlled entry points, as well as upgraded surveillance systems. These changes are designed to create a safe, secure environment where individuals can find refuge without fear of harm or instability.

A Critical Need for Infrastructure Upgrades

The shelter’s kitchen and cafeteria, which serve between 60,000 and 80,000 meals annually, will receive much-needed upgrades. The kitchen, which has not seen a significant overhaul in over 20 years, is vital in supporting the daily needs of the men staying at Wheeler Mission. The improvements will ensure that the facility can continue to serve nutritious meals at the volume required, enabling staff to meet the dietary needs of the individuals who depend on the shelter.

Additionally, the campaign will create new office spaces and private exam rooms for community partners who provide essential services such as addiction treatment, medical care, job training, and behavioral healthcare. By bringing these services under one roof, Wheeler Mission hopes to create a holistic support system that addresses not only the immediate needs of homelessness but also the long-term barriers that prevent individuals from achieving self-sufficiency.

Expanding Long-Term Programs and Residential Support

One of the most exciting aspects of the campaign is its emphasis on expanding the shelter’s long-term residential programs. These programs are designed to offer more than just a temporary safe haven; they aim to provide men with the skills and resources needed to reintegrate into society. The campaign will increase the available capacity and create more classroom space for these critical programs, which will focus on job training, financial literacy, and personal development.

By enhancing the shelter’s physical infrastructure and expanding its programs, Wheeler Mission seeks to give its guests the tools and opportunities they need to achieve lasting stability. The organization’s long-term goal is to reduce the cycle of homelessness in the community, ensuring that those who pass through its doors have a clear path to a better future.

A Call for Community Support

“This campaign challenges us to do more than provide a place of refuge—it’s about empowering our guests with work readiness, life skills, and providing opportunities leading to their stability, while committing daily to their success,” Jones explained. “With our community’s support and by God’s grace, together we will help restore identity and purpose, reignite hope, and transform lives so our guests can thrive in our community with confidence, dignity, and a fresh start.”

To kick off the Transforming Lives, Building Hope campaign, Wheeler Mission will host a public event titled “Sunshine & Shelter: A Summer Gathering for Good!” The event will take place on July 10th from 6-7:30 pm at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington. The event will offer attendees an opportunity to learn more about the campaign, hear from the staff and leaders at Wheeler Mission, and find out how they can get involved in supporting the initiative.

An Invitation to Be Part of the Change

Wheeler Mission is calling on the community to participate in this life-changing effort. Supporters are encouraged to contribute to the campaign through three-year pledges, with the goal of ensuring the mission can continue providing the essential services to those in need. Donations can be made directly through Wheeler Mission’s campaign website, Building Hope – Wheeler Mission, or by reaching out to Dana Jones for more information.

Through the Transforming Lives, Building Hope campaign, Wheeler Mission—Bloomington is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness. With the support of the community, the organization is determined to provide not only shelter but also a pathway to self-sufficiency, healing, and a renewed sense of hope.

The work ahead is vast, but with the generosity of the community, Wheeler Mission is taking bold steps toward a future where every individual has the opportunity to transform their life.
