WFIU news receives two prestigious regional murrow awards for outstanding journalism achievement

Bloomington, Indiana – WFIU News, the news arm of Indiana Public Media, has garnered two prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). The awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in electronic journalism, highlight the newsroom’s exemplary coverage of breaking news and digital storytelling.

The station was honored in two categories—Digital and Breaking News Coverage—for its comprehensive reporting on the protests that disrupted graduation ceremonies on college campuses. These protests, which attracted significant attention across the nation, were the focal point of WFIU News’ coverage, marking a moment of excellence in the field of broadcast journalism.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards are widely regarded as some of the highest accolades in the industry, celebrating journalistic excellence across both digital and broadcast platforms. Since their inception in 1971, the awards have been presented to those who embody the values and standards set by Edward R. Murrow, one of the most respected figures in broadcast history. Murrow’s legacy, which defined the spirit of integrity, courage, and professionalism, continues to influence journalism to this day.

WFIU News competed in the small market radio division, which includes newsrooms from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. The recognition underscores the station’s commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful journalism that resonates with local and regional audiences. Despite the competitive nature of the category, WFIU News’ coverage stood out for its in-depth reporting and ability to capture the complexities of the protests, reflecting the station’s role as a trusted source for news in the community.

This recognition is especially significant as the Regional Murrow Awards serve as a stepping stone to the National Edward R. Murrow Awards. Winners from regional competitions automatically advance to the national level, where the best of the best in digital and broadcast journalism will be celebrated. National winners will be announced in August, with the grand ceremony taking place at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala in New York City on October 13.

The announcement of the Regional Murrow Awards comes as a testament to WFIU News’ dedication to journalistic excellence and its ability to engage with complex and evolving stories. The station’s coverage of the campus protests exemplifies how local newsrooms can respond to major news events with clarity and precision, offering audiences valuable context while maintaining a high standard of reporting.
