Bloomington, Indiana – This month’s Gallery Walk will feature a striking new exhibition by photographer Lorenzo Poli, whose series The Geoglyphs of Our Times confronts viewers with the vast scale of resource mining in South America. The show opens Friday, Sept. 5, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pictura Gallery, located at 202 S Rogers Street.
Poli’s work captures mines that have been carved into the earth in ways that seem almost mythic in size and impact. Through his images, he highlights not only the monumental physical alterations to the land but also the broader implications of human extraction and consumption. “The Geoglyphs of Our Times” offers both a visual spectacle and a meditation on how industry shapes landscapes and communities.
The exhibition will remain on view through Nov. 1, giving visitors two months to experience the project. As part of the opening reception, guests can enjoy food from Maiz Colombiana along with beer and wine available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public, aligning with Gallery Walk’s mission of making art accessible to the Bloomington community.
Poli’s photography has been gaining international recognition, most recently earning him the 2025 Life Framer Series Award. The honor was juried by Pictura Co-Curators Mia Dalglish and Lisa Woodward, who praised the series for its bold engagement with urgent environmental themes. Their decision to spotlight Poli’s work in this award underscores the importance of connecting contemporary art with global issues.
Pictura Gallery, which hosts the exhibition, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery has established itself as a leading venue for contemporary photography, bringing internationally acclaimed artists to Bloomington while fostering dialogue between artists and audiences.
With The Geoglyphs of Our Times, Poli invites viewers to consider how far-reaching the consequences of modern industry have become. The exhibition promises to spark conversation not only about art but about sustainability, responsibility, and the ways humans continue to transform the planet.
