Bloomington, Indiana – On the evening of May 16, 2025, a powerful storm swept through the area, causing significant damage to the People and Animal Learning Services (PALS) facility. The storm destroyed the main barn and heavily damaged other structures, but in a silver lining, all of the horses remained unharmed, and no people were present during the disaster.
While the storm wreaked havoc on PALS’ physical space, it could have been much worse. Thanks to the quick and decisive actions of staff, volunteers, and community members, the horses were safely secured and moved to other locations where they could continue to receive the care they need. The swift response of the PALS team, combined with the support of the local community, ensured that the horses would not suffer any life-threatening injuries.
“We’re heartbroken over the damage to our facility but incredibly grateful that every person and horse is safe,” said Chris Herring, Executive Director of PALS. “The outpouring of support from the community and the dedication of our staff and volunteers gives us strength and hope.”
The storm may have torn apart much of the physical structure at PALS, but the emotional and logistical support that has poured in from all corners of the community has given the team a renewed sense of determination. PALS is known for its work in providing therapy and healing through interaction with horses, and while this setback is undoubtedly challenging, the organization is dedicated to restoring its services as soon as possible.
“The storm may have left behind devastation, but it hasn’t shaken our mission,” Herring continued. “We are working tirelessly to get back on track and continue offering therapeutic services to those who need them most. Our clients and the community will always remain our top priority.”
As the staff works to rebuild, they have turned to the community for assistance. “The outpouring of support has been heartwarming, but we still have a long way to go,” said Herring. “Monetary donations are being accepted to help with disaster relief efforts and to fund the rebuilding of our facilities. We encourage anyone who can help to consider supporting our recovery efforts.”
Those looking to assist can make monetary donations at PALS Disaster Relief Page. For anyone interested in offering other forms of support, the team has set up an email at [email protected] to coordinate assistance.
The storm may have caused physical destruction, but the spirit of PALS is undeterred. Through the combined effort of the staff, volunteers, and the broader community, the organization is working hard to overcome the damage and ensure that the horses continue to provide healing and support to those in need.
PALS remains a vital resource for both people and animals, and despite this setback, its commitment to offering therapeutic services through horses will continue.
