Owen County launches monthly caregiver support groups to assist family members and friends of people with dementia

Bloomington, Indiana – Family members and friends caring for loved ones with dementia now have a new opportunity for support, education, and connection thanks to monthly caregiver support groups hosted by Dementia Friendly Owen County in partnership with the Area 10 Agency on Aging. These groups are set to continue throughout 2026, offering a consistent space for caregivers to share experiences and gain valuable guidance.

The support groups will be held at the Owen County Library on the fourth Thursday of every month. To accommodate varying schedules, two session times are available: from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This flexibility allows caregivers to attend either during a midday break or after work hours, ensuring that more community members can participate.

The sessions are designed to provide more than just a meeting place. Participants will have access to educational resources, problem-solving strategies, and peer support, helping them navigate the challenges of caring for someone with dementia. “These groups provide a safe and supportive environment for caregivers to learn, share, and find encouragement from others who understand their daily struggles,” program organizers said.

Community organizations across Owen County have joined efforts to support this initiative. Partners include Owen Valley Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Area 10 on Aging, Elara Caring, Home Instead, Autumn Park Senior Community, Ageless Transitions, Cornerstone Caregiving, and Dynasty Haven. Their involvement ensures that caregivers have access to a wealth of resources and expertise throughout the program.

The caregiver support groups are open to anyone providing care for a person with dementia, whether they are family members, friends, or neighbors. Attendees can expect to participate in discussions, learn practical care techniques, and build connections with others facing similar challenges. Organizers emphasize that even experienced caregivers can benefit from the shared experiences and insights offered by the group.

Questions about the support groups or participation can be directed to Amy Gurrettaz at Area 10 Agency on Aging. She can be reached by phone at 812-935-2582 or by email at [email protected].

By offering these monthly sessions, Dementia Friendly Owen County and its partners aim to strengthen the support network for caregivers, promote understanding of dementia care, and ensure that those providing daily care do not feel isolated. The initiative underscores the community’s commitment to supporting families navigating the complexities of dementia while fostering connection, learning, and resilience.
