MCCSC invites community members to provide input on potential future uses for the former Herald-Times property on South Walnut Street

Monroe County, Indiana – The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) is reaching out to residents to gather input on the future of the former Herald-Times property on South Walnut Street. The Board of School Trustees is encouraging community members to share their thoughts through an online survey and a public forum as part of its planning process.

The online survey is open now and will remain available through January 30, 2026, giving residents ample opportunity to weigh in on potential uses for the property. In addition, MCCSC will host a community forum on January 29 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Bloomington High School South in the Carmichael Auditorium, located at 1965 S. Walnut Street. Those planning to attend the forum are encouraged to RSVP through the survey to help the district with event planning.

MCCSC originally purchased the property in 2022 with an eye toward potential future uses. Since acquiring the site, the Board has been evaluating a range of options, and officials say community feedback will play an important role in guiding the decision-making process.

The Board highlighted key details about the property during its November 18, 2025, meeting. This information, which includes zoning, site size, and preliminary considerations for potential development, is publicly accessible online through BoardDocs for residents who wish to review it before submitting feedback.

“Community perspectives will help inform our decision-making as we consider the best future use for the former Herald-Times property,” MCCSC representatives said, underscoring the district’s commitment to transparency and public engagement.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the survey and attend the community forum to ensure their voices are heard. The district emphasizes that the input collected will help shape the vision for the property and influence how it can best serve students and the broader Bloomington community.

By actively seeking public feedback, MCCSC hopes to make a decision that balances practical needs with community priorities, creating a site that benefits both the school system and local residents.
