Lucky Powerball player wins $50,000 with ticket sold in Portage

Indianapolis, Indiana – A lucky Powerball player in northwest Indiana has a big reason to celebrate this week after purchasing a winning ticket worth $50,000 in Portage. The Hoosier Lottery confirmed that one ticket matched four out of five white balls and the red Powerball in Wednesday night’s drawing, landing the buyer a sizable prize.

The winning ticket was sold at Zip Food Stores, located at 1856 Samuelson Road in Portage. The store has now joined a growing list of Indiana retailers that have handed out winning Powerball tickets over the years. Lottery officials are encouraging all players who bought tickets there to check their numbers carefully, as someone may be holding the lucky ticket without realizing it.

The winning numbers for the October 22 drawing were 18, 37, 52, 54, and 60, with the Powerball number 12. The Hoosier Lottery advises players to double-check their entries using the free Hoosier Lottery mobile app or by visiting an authorized retailer.

The person who holds the $50,000 ticket should sign it immediately and keep it in a safe place. Lottery officials also recommend contacting the Hoosier Lottery customer service line at 1-800-955-6886 for instructions on how to claim the prize. Winners are encouraged to consult a financial advisor before collecting their earnings to help manage taxes and future planning.

“Winning moments like these are always exciting for our players,” a Hoosier Lottery spokesperson said. “We remind everyone to play responsibly and check those tickets carefully — you never know when it could be your turn.”

Since its first drawing in 1992, Powerball has become one of the most popular lottery games in the nation, offering players the dream of life-changing jackpots while contributing to public programs and causes. Across the United States, Powerball has raised more than $25 billion for education, infrastructure, and community development projects.

Indiana holds a special place in Powerball history — the state produced the very first jackpot winner back in 1992 and still leads the nation with 39 jackpot winners to date. This long-standing record continues to make the Hoosier State one of the luckiest places in America to buy a Powerball ticket.

For players still hoping to strike it rich, the excitement isn’t over yet. The next Powerball drawing will take place on Saturday, October 25, with an estimated jackpot of $344 million up for grabs. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

Whether it’s the next jackpot or another smaller win, Hoosier Lottery officials say the thrill of possibility keeps players coming back — and for one person in Portage, that possibility just turned into a $50,000 reality.
