Ivy Tech Bloomington student earns full spring semester tuition after winning the college’s early-registration contest

Bloomington, Indiana – A routine early-registration push at Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington turned into a life-changing moment for one student this week. Autumn Stevens, an entrepreneurship major balancing school, work, and parenting, was selected as the winner of the college’s spring registration contest—an award that covers her full tuition for the Spring Semester 2026. The prize amounts to $1,812, a sum that she says removes a heavy financial barrier and clears the path for her next steps.

For Stevens, who identifies as both a first-generation college student and a young parent, the news offered more than just a financial break. It brought momentum at a time when planning for school, family, and personal ambitions can feel overwhelming. “Winning a free semester allows me to keep pursuing my goals without the financial stress that often holds first-generation students and young parents back,” Stevens said. “I returned to school to build a better future for my son and to create a bookstore–teahouse.”

Stevens is currently immersed in Ivy Tech’s entrepreneurship program, a hands-on track designed to help students develop practical business skills in as little as two semesters. Her own venture, A Cup of Leaves & Books, is already taking shape as a wellness-focused brand offering organic teas and body care products. With the financial pressure of next semester lifted, she now has more room to grow her business while mapping out the next phase—opening a physical storefront where customers can explore books, tea, and a welcoming community atmosphere.

The meaning of this award goes beyond immediate cost savings for her. In a second statement, Stevens emphasized how essential support systems are for students juggling multiple responsibilities. “This support helps me stay focused on that dream and move closer to creating a safe, inspiring space for both my son and the community.”

Looking further ahead, she hopes to advance her education even more. Stevens plans to pursue a master’s degree in women’s literature one day, a goal she believes will complement her creative vision and provide deeper knowledge she can bring into her future business environment.

Ivy Tech Bloomington officials continue to encourage students to sign up early for spring classes, noting that enrollment is still open and there is time to join before the semester begins on January 12. The campus offers more than 40 career programs and transfer pathways, with multiple course start dates throughout the year to help students finish on flexible timelines. Prospective students can apply online at ivytech.edu/bloomington or email [email protected] for assistance. Those interested in free, short-term workforce training can learn more at ivytech.edu/bloomington/NLJ.

For Stevens, the spring semester now looks a bit brighter—and a little less stressful—as she continues building both her education and her entrepreneurial future.
