Bloomington, Indiana – Indiana University has selected a veteran media executive to take the helm of its public broadcasting operations. Michael Arnold, who has spent more than two decades leading public media organizations across the country, will serve as the next executive director of integrated public media at IU Bloomington’s Media School. His appointment officially begins September 22.
The newly redefined role carries broad responsibilities. Arnold will oversee Indiana Public Media, the umbrella that includes WTIU Public Television, WFIU Public Radio, and a growing portfolio of digital platforms, podcasts, and multimedia projects. In addition to steering strategy for these outlets, he will provide oversight for student media, tying professional operations more closely to the university’s educational mission.
Arnold, a native Hoosier, brings with him 25 years of leadership in public broadcasting. His resume spans senior roles at KUNC Radio and The Colorado Sound, Wisconsin Public Radio, Public Radio International, and New Hampshire Public Radio. In each of these positions, he is credited with expanding audiences, securing significant funding for new content, and championing inclusive storytelling.
At KUNC in Colorado, Arnold spearheaded the creation of new digital platforms and led the Colorado Capitol News Alliance, a collaboration designed to strengthen coverage of state government. He also transformed the station’s digital strategy, resulting in a doubling of its monthly audience. His career, marked by both innovation and a focus on community-centered journalism, reflects the goals IU leaders say they hope to achieve with Indiana Public Media.
“Michael Arnold brings a vision and a proven track record of innovation and success, which will strengthen Indiana Public Media during this critical time,” said David Tolchinsky, dean of The Media School. “His leadership in public service media and his strategic approach to integrated platforms will help us expand our reach, connect public media to the educational mission of The Media School, and deepen our impact across Indiana and beyond.”
Arnold said he is eager to begin this next chapter in his career. “This is a moment of tremendous possibility for public media. I’m honored to lead a team that is deeply committed to storytelling, innovation and serving the public interest,” he said.
A Role Shaped for the Future
The position of executive director of integrated public media has been redefined at a time when traditional broadcasting faces rapid change. For IU, the move signals an emphasis on blending radio, television, and digital outlets into a unified vision that serves audiences across multiple platforms.
Arnold will be tasked with leading strategic planning, shaping content development, and ensuring operational leadership across all Indiana Public Media units. University officials say his role will also involve guiding collaborations that extend beyond the newsroom—building connections with community partners while also creating opportunities for students to gain practical experience.
Public media has long been a key part of IU Bloomington’s outreach mission, with WTIU and WFIU serving listeners and viewers across Indiana. The addition of digital programming and podcasting has further expanded its reach, providing new avenues for storytelling and engagement. Arnold’s track record in these areas made him a natural choice for the role.
Looking Ahead
Faculty, staff, and students within The Media School are expected to benefit from Arnold’s leadership as he integrates student learning with professional production. The hope is that by aligning educational experiences with industry standards, students will leave IU better prepared for careers in a shifting media landscape.
For Arnold, the mission of public service journalism remains central. He has often emphasized the need to elevate underrepresented voices and create content that reflects diverse communities. His leadership at Indiana Public Media is expected to carry forward that same philosophy.
As the media environment continues to evolve, IU officials believe Arnold’s arrival comes at a pivotal time. By pairing his national experience with his local roots, they hope to strengthen Indiana Public Media’s relevance, both to audiences in Bloomington and across the state.
