Constellation Stage & Screen prepares to debut the world premiere of Polkadots The Cool Kids Musical featuring puppetry magic

Bloomington, Indiana – Constellation Stage & Screen is set to debut a groundbreaking production this spring with the world premiere of “Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical”—now featuring puppets! This innovative adaptation of the acclaimed musical will run from April 25 to May 11 at the Waldron Auditorium, bringing a heartwarming tale of friendship and acceptance to audiences of all ages.

“Polkadots” tells the inspiring story of Lily Polkadot, an 8-year-old girl who moves to the strictly “Squares Only” town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot to attend an all-Square school, Lily struggles to fit in and win the acceptance of her peers. However, hope emerges when she befriends Sky, a quiet Square boy whose curiosity about her unique appearance blossoms into an unexpected friendship. Inspired by the real-life events of the Little Rock Nine, this musical delivers a colorful and uplifting lesson about celebrating differences and embracing diversity.

Constellation’s version of “Polkadots” will introduce an exciting new element—puppetry. The production is being developed in collaboration with the show’s writer, two-time Emmy nominee Douglas Lyons, and expert puppet maker Matthew Lish, known for his work with Sesame Street at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. This fusion of musical theater and puppetry aims to offer an enchanting and immersive experience for audiences young and old.

Bringing the show to life is an exceptional creative team led by Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee John Tartaglia, who will co-direct alongside accomplished director and choreographer Melanie Tojio Lockyer. Tartaglia, best known for his performances in “Avenue Q” and “Shrek the Musical,” has a rich background in puppetry, including his work as an executive producer, writer, and performer in the Emmy-winning “Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock.” Lockyer, who has directed national tours for Nickelodeon productions such as “Baby Shark Live” and “Blue’s Clues & You,” brings extensive experience in children’s theater to the production.

The show’s talented ensemble cast will be making their Constellation debuts, ensuring fresh performances that capture the spirit of the story. Maliha Sayed, a rising star from Chicago, takes on the role of Lily Polkadot, while Reagan Cole Minnette portrays Penelope Square. Alex Burnette, known for his work in national tours of “Madagascar the Musical” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” plays Sky Square, with Mikelle Miller rounding out the cast as Mrs. Square and Mama Square.

As part of its commitment to accessibility, Constellation Stage & Screen is offering a sensory-friendly performance on Sunday, May 11, at 1:00 p.m. This special presentation is designed to create an inclusive environment for families with children who have sensory sensitivities. Modifications to lighting, sound, and seating arrangements will ensure a comfortable experience, and the performance will be “Pay What You Will,” allowing attendees to choose their own ticket price.

To bring this ambitious vision to life, Constellation recently secured a generous grant from the First Financial Foundation, which will fund the creation of professional puppets for the production. These high-quality puppets will be made available for rent to theaters nationwide, expanding the reach of this unique interpretation. The grant will also support weekday matinee performances for local schools, allowing students to experience the magic of live theater firsthand.

Tickets for “Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical” are now on sale, with prices starting at $15 for children and $25 for adults. Tickets can be purchased through Constellation’s website (seeconstellation.org), by phone at (812) 336-9300, or in person at their Walnut Street location in Bloomington.

With a stellar creative team, a heartfelt message, and the magic of puppetry, Constellation’s world premiere of “Polkadots” promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event. Don’t miss the chance to experience this inspiring story of inclusion, resilience, and the power of friendship.
