City of Bloomington warns residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for potential rising waters

Monroe County, Indiana – Monroe County residents are being urged to take precautionary measures as an Areal Flood Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service. With the potential for heavy rainfall, the City of Bloomington is advising individuals, especially those in flood-prone areas, to prepare in advance to safeguard their homes, property, and personal safety.

Local officials stress that flood preparedness is essential, as rising waters can pose significant risks to both property and lives. To help residents navigate this weather event safely, the city has provided key recommendations to enhance readiness before the floodwaters arrive.

Assessing Flood Risks

Understanding how water moves through the community is crucial. Residents are encouraged to identify locations where water tends to accumulate on their most-traveled routes and determine the safest and quickest way to reach higher ground. Having this knowledge in advance can make a significant difference in avoiding dangerous situations.

Home Protection Strategies

For those living in areas susceptible to flooding, early action can help minimize potential damage. The city recommends using sandbags or other protective barriers where possible. “If you have access to sandbags or other materials, use them to protect your home from floodwaters if you have sufficient time to do so,” officials advised.

Communication is Key

In any emergency, staying in touch with loved ones is essential. The city advises residents to establish a communication plan in advance. Having a designated point of contact for status updates and a predetermined safe meeting location can provide reassurance in the event of an emergency.

Emergency Preparedness Kit

A well-stocked emergency kit is critical for weathering a flooding event safely. The city recommends residents have at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food, bottled water, and essential medications on hand. Other recommended supplies include flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, first aid supplies, rubber boots and gloves, and either a NOAA Weather Radio or a battery-powered radio for updates.

Permit Requirements for Floodplain Properties

For those with property located in a Special Flood Hazard Area, any flood-related repairs or reconstruction will require a local floodplain development permit. These permits, issued by the City of Bloomington Planning and Transportation Department, are necessary under the City’s Floodplain Ordinance (Unified Development Ordinance 20.04.040). Property owners who fail to secure the required permit could face fines of up to $2,500 per day. In some cases, additional approval from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) may also be necessary before work can commence.

Residents seeking more information or needing to apply for a floodplain development permit can contact Rachael Johnson at 812-349-3588 or via email at [email protected].

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

With flood conditions posing potential hazards, officials urge Monroe County residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. By planning ahead, securing their homes, and ensuring they have essential supplies, individuals can mitigate risks and protect themselves from the dangers of rising waters.

City officials remind residents that staying informed is crucial, and they encourage everyone to monitor local weather reports and emergency alerts as conditions develop. Taking action now can make all the difference in ensuring personal safety and reducing property damage during a flood event.
