City of Bloomington fiber internet project now more than halfway complete and on track for full city-wide high-speed service by the end of 2026

Bloomington, Indiana – The City of Bloomington’s ambitious initiative to bring high-speed fiber internet to homes and businesses across the city is now more than halfway complete, signaling major progress on what has been described as one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Bloomington’s history. The project, a partnership between the city and Meridiam/mStreet Fiber, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026, providing residents and businesses with fast, reliable internet access across the community.

Construction of the fiber network, which began in previous years, experienced a setback in early 2025 following the collapse of AEG, the project’s primary construction contractor. This pause affected work in public rights-of-way, leaving some nearly completed zones inactive for months. In recent weeks, however, mStreet Fiber has ramped up activity, addressing lingering issues from AEG’s work and moving closer to bringing additional neighborhoods online.

One major area of focus has been the remediation of AEG-related construction issues. Since September 2024, City Engineering has tracked and completed more than 700 repair items, with fewer than 50 remaining. City officials expect this remediation work to be fully completed by mid-November, clearing the way for the next phase of construction.

In addition to repairs, work has resumed in three nearly completed zones, which together will add 2,500 residential units to the fiber network. This portion of the project is expected to be finished by the end of November, allowing more Bloomington residents to begin taking advantage of high-speed connectivity.

Looking ahead, Meridiam/mStreet Fiber is reviewing bids for the remaining construction work needed to complete the city-wide network. Officials anticipate selecting a vendor by the end of the year, with full-scale construction resuming shortly thereafter. Once finished, the project will include more than 200 miles of conduit and fiber installed throughout the city, connecting homes, businesses, and public facilities with modern digital infrastructure.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to track progress through the City’s Fiber Construction Progress Map, which provides up-to-date information on current construction areas and service availability. City officials have also emphasized that fiber construction work takes place in public rights-of-way, which can occasionally result in disruptions to unmarked utilities such as sewer laterals or sprinkler systems. Residents are advised to report any issues promptly to ensure quick resolution.

The project is part of Bloomington’s broader effort to expand digital opportunity for all residents, recognizing the growing importance of reliable, high-speed internet for education, business, and everyday life. By providing modern connectivity city-wide, the fiber initiative aims to position Bloomington as a leader in digital infrastructure in Indiana.

Despite the challenges presented by contractor setbacks and complex construction logistics, city leaders remain confident that the fiber network will be completed on schedule. The 2026 target represents not just a technological milestone, but a major step forward in providing equitable internet access and supporting economic growth and community development throughout Bloomington.

With remediation nearly finished, key zones nearing activation, and bids underway for the final construction phase, the project is now on a clear path toward completion. For the thousands of residents eagerly awaiting faster, more reliable internet, the end of 2026 promises a new era of connectivity, with Bloomington firmly on the map as a city equipped for the digital age.
