Bloomington, Indiana – Downtown Bloomington is preparing for a busy Friday afternoon as one of Indiana University’s biggest annual celebrations returns to Kirkwood Avenue. For drivers, however, the festivities will come with temporary street closures, parking restrictions, and changes to normal traffic patterns.
The disruptions will begin hours before the first parade participants make their way through downtown. With Homecoming celebrations, a major football game, and Halloween all packed into one weekend, city officials are encouraging residents and visitors to prepare for heavier traffic.
The Indiana University 2026 Homecoming Parade is scheduled for Friday, October 30, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The university-organized procession will follow Kirkwood Avenue, traveling east from Washington Street toward the Sample Gates at Indiana Avenue.
The parade’s return to Kirkwood Avenue will bring temporary restrictions to several downtown streets. City officials have outlined parking limitations and road closures intended to accommodate parade preparations, participants, and spectators.
Parking will be prohibited along Kirkwood Avenue between Walnut Street and Indiana Avenue. Restrictions will also apply to Washington, Lincoln, Grant, Dunn, and Indiana streets between Fourth and Sixth streets.
Drivers should pay particular attention to the timing of the closures, as some restrictions will take effect well before the parade begins.
Washington Street will close to vehicle traffic at 2:30 p.m. Friday to allow organizers to prepare the parade staging area. Kirkwood Avenue will close at 5 p.m., approximately 30 minutes before the procession starts.
The affected portions of Kirkwood Avenue and the nearby north-south streets will reopen after the parade concludes. Officials have not provided a specific reopening time.
The temporary changes could affect commuters, downtown employees, businesses, and anyone planning to visit restaurants or shops during the afternoon and evening.
Residents traveling through central Bloomington should expect additional pedestrians and possible delays. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time, using alternate streets when possible, and planning parking arrangements before arriving downtown.
Visitors attending the parade are encouraged to consider Bloomington’s municipal parking garages rather than searching for street parking near the event route.
Friday’s parade is only the beginning of what is expected to be an especially active weekend around Bloomington.
Indiana University’s Homecoming football game against Minnesota is scheduled for Saturday, October 31. The game coincides with Halloween, adding another major occasion to a weekend already filled with university activities.
Bloomington’s official trick-or-treating hours will remain unchanged, running from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
With children and families expected to move through residential neighborhoods during those hours, motorists are being reminded to remain attentive, reduce risks around pedestrians, and anticipate additional traffic.
Indiana University is responsible for organizing and coordinating Homecoming weekend activities. Those seeking parade participation details, event schedules, or other information can consult the university’s official Homecoming Guide.
For Bloomington residents, the main message is simple: downtown will remain a center of celebration throughout the weekend, but getting around will require extra planning, particularly Friday afternoon.
