American Formula One veteran Logan Sargeant prepares to make his IMSA debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports

Indianapolis, Indiana – Logan Sargeant, the American racing driver who made waves in Formula One, is set to tackle a new chapter in his motorsport career this month, trading open-wheel F1 machinery for the endurance challenges of IMSA sports car racing. On September 21, 2025, Sargeant will make his IMSA debut at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a venue that ranks among the most storied in global motorsports. He will pilot the No. 52 ORECA LMP2 07 as part of PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports’ Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) lineup, kicking off a two-race stint that will also include the season-ending Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

The move marks a significant transition for the 24-year-old Floridian, who hails from Fort Lauderdale. Known for his methodical climb through the European open-wheel ranks, Sargeant has spent the past decade competing at the highest levels of international motorsport. “I’m super excited to be jumping back into a car for the last two LMP2 races in IMSA with PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports,” Sargeant said. “It’s a great opportunity to drive at two special tracks — Indianapolis and Road Atlanta. I’m eager to contribute to a successful couple races for the team and bring my knowledge and experience to everyone involved.”

Sargeant’s motorsport journey began in earnest in 2015, when he became the first American since 1978 to win the FIA Karting World KF Junior Championship. From there, he followed the well-trodden European ladder, moving from FIA Formula 4 to Formula 3, then Formula 2, before breaking into the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula One, with Williams Racing during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. His time in F1 was historic for American fans; Sargeant scored a championship point at the 2023 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, finishing 10th and becoming the first American in three decades to do so.

Despite these milestones, Sargeant’s tenure in Formula One was brief. After two seasons, Williams Racing parted ways with him. He tested NTT INDYCAR SERIES machinery with Meyer Shank Racing at The Thermal Club in November but did not secure a seat. Following an extended break from competitive racing, the IMSA opportunity came at a time when Sargeant was ready to recalibrate, refresh, and refocus on the track.

For PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, Sargeant’s addition brings fresh experience and a proven talent to the No. 52 team, which currently sits 10th in the LMP2 owner points standings. The team began the 2025 season with a strong showing at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, finishing third with a driver lineup including Ben Keating, Mathias Beche, Rodrigo Sales, and Benjamin Pedersen. Since that promising start, however, the team has struggled to maintain consistent top-five finishes, with a lone fifth-place result at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on July 13 standing out as a highlight.

Team Principal Bobby Oergel expressed optimism that Sargeant could provide a much-needed boost. “Myself and all the crew here at PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports are very excited that Logan is able to join us for the last two endurance events of this season,” Oergel said. “I am sure Logan’s pace will be top-notch, and everyone will work well together. We really want to welcome him into our team in a smooth and easy fashion.”

The challenges Sargeant will face in IMSA differ markedly from his open-wheel experience. Unlike in European formula racing, where drivers often compete directly against teammates for qualifying and race supremacy, sports car racing emphasizes collaboration. Drivers share a car and must work closely to optimize performance across long-duration endurance events. At Indianapolis, Sargeant will share driving duties with Naveen Rao and Benjamin Pedersen in the six-hour TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks race.

Pedersen, a 26-year-old Dane, brings experience that could help Sargeant adjust to the nuances of endurance racing at IMS. Having competed in 17 starts in the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season with A.J. Foyt Enterprises and as a full-time INDY NXT by Firestone driver in 2021-22, Pedersen also boasts a standout performance at the 2023 Indianapolis 500, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors after qualifying 11th. His four-lap average of 232.671 mph made him the second-fastest rookie qualifier in Indy 500 history at the time, a record since eclipsed by Kyle Larson and Robert Shwartzman.

“I’m really excited for the last two rounds and to welcome Logan to the team,” Pedersen said. “We’ve found a lot of speed in the car lately, and our full focus for the final rounds is 100% on getting a win.” With teammates like Pedersen providing guidance and a collaborative environment, Sargeant can adapt quickly to the demands of shared seat driving, navigating the complex IMS road course layout while maximizing the car’s performance.

The TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks weekend promises to be a spectacle for fans, spanning three days from September 19-21. The festival showcases the pinnacle of sports car racing, with 18 manufacturers competing in IMSA and unparalleled access for fans to the garage area. Attendees will have a unique opportunity to meet drivers, see cars up close, and witness the teamwork and strategy that make endurance racing a captivating blend of speed, precision, and coordination.

Sargeant’s transition to IMSA represents a broader trend of drivers moving between different forms of motorsport to expand their skill set and seize new competitive opportunities. For Sargeant, the challenge is both personal and professional: mastering the nuances of endurance racing, learning to collaborate closely with teammates, and competing on some of America’s most iconic tracks. His experience in Formula One, combined with a strong foundation in karting and European formula series, equips him with the precision, racecraft, and adaptability needed to succeed.

Looking ahead, the opportunity to race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway holds special significance. Sargeant has raced internationally on circuits known for their history and technical challenge, but Indianapolis carries a particular allure for any American driver. Adding this venue to his résumé is not just another race—it’s a milestone and a symbolic entry into a new chapter of his career.

Beyond the track, the IMSA debut is also a chance for Sargeant to reconnect with American motorsport fans. After competing primarily in Europe for much of his career, this return to U.S. circuits allows him to reestablish visibility among domestic audiences and showcase his talent to a broader fanbase. The Petit Le Mans finale at Road Atlanta will offer a second platform to demonstrate consistency and adaptability, rounding out a two-race IMSA stint that could set the stage for more sports car opportunities in the future.

For PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, the infusion of Sargeant’s experience and speed is expected to elevate the team’s performance in the closing rounds of the season. With collaborative strategies, shared knowledge among drivers, and the support of a skilled pit crew, the No. 52 car has the potential to climb the standings and finish the season on a high note.

As September 21 approaches, anticipation builds not only for the Battle on the Bricks itself but also for watching a young American racer navigate the unique demands of IMSA endurance racing. For Logan Sargeant, this is more than a return to competitive driving—it’s a reinvention, a chance to apply years of experience at the highest levels of motorsport while embracing the collaborative and strategic world of endurance racing.

Whether Sargeant can translate his open-wheel success to IMSA dominance remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: fans at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will witness a rare combination of skill, determination, and adaptability as an American F1 veteran takes on the challenge of endurance racing on home soil.
