Indianapolis, Indiana – A few hours of reckless driving on Indianapolis’ west side ended with six people in custody and six vehicles being towed away after a coordinated police operation Wednesday night.
What began as drivers spinning vehicles and drawing crowds quickly became a public safety concern. Police said officers saw cars blocking intersections, performing spins in parking lots and speeding dangerously close to bystanders, passengers and other motorists.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department worked alongside the Indiana State Police and Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department during the enforcement effort. Officers moved in to disperse the gatherings and ultimately stopped all six vehicles involved.
According to IMPD, each of the six drivers was arrested on the preliminary charge of criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony. One of those drivers also had an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant connected to a reckless driving case in Johnson County.
Police stressed that the activity went beyond drivers simply attempting to show off. The vehicles were being operated around groups of people and other traffic, creating conditions where a mistake could have placed numerous people in danger.
“This behavior is dangerous to everyone who uses our roadways,” police said.
The department also delivered a direct warning that similar activity will continue to bring an enforcement response.
“Let us be clear: this will not be tolerated. If you choose to spin, block intersections, or drive recklessly, you will be arrested.”
Police said enforcement efforts will continue and that officers will use available tools to hold offenders accountable while protecting residents and motorists.
The Wednesday night operation also highlights the coordinated approach authorities are taking when responding to spinning, street takeovers and other forms of dangerous driving. Rather than focusing only on clearing crowds, officers stopped the vehicles and made arrests after observing the activity.
