Indianapolis, Indiana – A west side park that once sat waiting for its next chapter is now filled with summer noise again — water spraying, basketballs bouncing, pickleball paddles popping, and children testing out a new playground.

Earlier this week, Indy Parks joined City-County Councilor Jessica McCormick and community leaders to unveil the renovated Chapel Hill Park, marking the completion of a $2.6 million project aimed at turning the neighborhood park into a stronger gathering place for families. The work brought in a new playground, splash pad, basketball court and pickleball courts.

Mayor Joe Hogsett said the improvements are already giving west side residents a place to make summer memories.

“Whether they are playing in the new splash pad or picking up a game of pickleball on the brand-new courts, our neighbors on the west side are already creating unforgettable summertime memories at the reimagined Chapel Hill Park,” Hogsett said.

“Improvements like these, made possible by the generosity of the Lilly Endowment, are transforming parks all over the city into vibrant, community-centered spaces and contributing to the unparalleled quality of life we are building in Indianapolis.”

The Chapel Hill Park opening is also part of a larger wave of park upgrades across Indianapolis funded through the Lilly Endowment Grant. According to Indy Parks, Chapel Hill is the 17th completed project supported by the grant so far, while 27 more projects are either under construction or expected to begin construction this summer. A broader list of recent and upcoming work is available through Indy Parks’ project page.

McCormick described the project as the result of a shared effort between residents, local government and community partners.

“Chapel Hill Park is a great example of what can happen when community partners, residents, and local government come together around a shared vision,” McCormick said. “This investment creates a welcoming space where families can gather, children can play, and neighbors can connect.”

Indy Parks Director Brittany Crone said the renovated park now offers something for both children and adults, from a cool place to play on hot days to courts ready for serious games.

The west side improvements do not stop at Chapel Hill. Robey Park is scheduled for work beginning in late summer or early fall 2026. Krannert Park has playground, trail and court upgrades underway, with completion expected in late 2026. Thatcher Park’s new playground is expected this year, while Christina Oaks Park and Gustafson Park both received new playgrounds in 2025. Sports field renovations at Gustafson are still underway.
