Indianapolis, Indiana – Indiana Governor Mike Braun joined members of Turning Point USA for a public event highlighting the importance of protecting free expression and encouraging open dialogue across the state’s schools and universities.

During the gathering, Braun issued a formal proclamation underscoring freedom of speech as one of the most essential principles in American civic life and calling for continued efforts to preserve that tradition for future generations.

The proclamation frames free speech as a core human liberty that allows individuals to search for truth and pursue happiness within a democratic society. It notes that the free exchange of ideas plays a central role in shaping an informed public and sustaining a vibrant civic culture.

According to the document, the ability to express differing viewpoints openly is vital to maintaining a healthy society where debate, discussion, and intellectual exploration can flourish.

As part of the announcement, Braun urged educational institutions across Indiana to ensure that student organizations focused on constitutional values and open dialogue are able to operate and grow on campus.

The governor specifically encouraged schools and universities to take steps that support groups such as Turning Point USA chapters, describing them as spaces where students can engage in discussions about liberty, civic responsibility, and the nation’s founding principles.

Speaking at the event, Braun praised the work of Turning Point USA’s Club America and similar organizations that aim to promote an understanding of American ideals and constitutional freedoms.

“I commend the work of Turning Point USA’s Club America and other organizations dedicated to fostering an appreciation for American exceptionalism, the importance of constitutional rights, and standing for freedom. I call on all schools and universities in Indiana to take all necessary steps to facilitate student organizations like Turning Point USA that foster the values of liberty and freedom of speech in the next generation of Hoosiers,” Governor Mike Braun said.

The governor also emphasized that strong and respectful dialogue benefits communities by bringing together individuals with different perspectives. When people exchange ideas freely, the proclamation states, it strengthens civic engagement and contributes to innovation, accountability in government, and mutual understanding among citizens.

Supporters of the initiative say fostering open discussion on campuses prepares students to participate thoughtfully in democratic institutions. By encouraging debate and protecting speech rights, they argue, educational environments can help develop a generation that values both liberty and respectful disagreement.

The event and proclamation together reflect a broader message from Braun’s office: that the principles of free speech and open dialogue remain essential to the country’s democratic traditions. Through partnerships with civic and student organizations, the governor signaled his intention to reinforce those values throughout Indiana’s academic communities.

Text from the proclamation:

Freedom of speech is a foundational human right that protects each person’s search for the truth and pursuit of happiness in society; and

The exchange of ideas is essential to promote a healthy, dynamic, and informed society; and

Robust, open dialogue strengthens communities by fostering civic engagement, innovation, government accountability, understanding, and respect among people with diverse viewpoints; and

Promoting a culture of open dialogue requires continual effort to ensure the preservation of individual liberty and the vitality of Indiana’s democratic institutions; and

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits government actors from abridging the freedom of speech; and

Article 1, Section 9 of the Indiana Constitution provides “No law shall be passed, restraining the free interchange of thought and opinion, or restricting the right to speak, write, or print, freely, on any subject whatever; but for the abuse of that right, every person shall be responsible.”

Now, therefore, I, Mike Braun, Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby proclaim the following. First, I reaffirm freedom of speech as a core value worthy of ongoing protection and celebration within our communities. Next, I commend the work of Turning Point USA’s Club America and other organizations dedicated to fostering an appreciation for American exceptionalism, the importance of constitutional rights, and standing for freedom. Third, I call on all schools and universities in Indiana to take all necessary steps to facilitate student organizations—such as Turning Point USA—that foster the values of liberty and freedom of speech in their students and institutions. Finally, I encourage all Hoosiers to engage in respectful discourse, seek mutual understanding in the pursuit of truth, and uphold the free speech principles that enrich and preserve our shared civic life.
