Bloomington, Indiana – The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has released updated operating hours and pricing for the Griffy Lake Boathouse ahead of the 2026 season, introducing several adjustments intended to reflect increasing operational expenses while continuing to provide safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation at one of the city’s most popular natural destinations.
Located at 3400 North Headley Road, the Griffy Lake Boathouse serves visitors who want to explore the scenic lake by watercraft or launch their own boats. The department said the latest updates are designed to improve seasonal access while maintaining the quality of services offered at the site.
Under the 2026 schedule, the boathouse will operate on a limited schedule in early spring before expanding to full daily service during the peak summer months. In April, the facility will open only on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Beginning in May and continuing through August, the boathouse will be open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hours shift slightly in the fall season. During September, the facility will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., while in October it will return to weekend-only service, also running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both September and October will feature later opening and closing times compared to previous seasons.
Pricing for watercraft rentals will also increase slightly in 2026. Hourly rentals will cost $12 per hour, up from $10 last year. Visitors who frequently rent boats may choose the 10-hour punch pass, which will now cost $100. While the price has increased from $90 in 2025, the new structure offers greater value overall, providing a $20 savings across the total rental hours.
The department has also introduced a new late return policy. Instead of a single flat fee, renters who bring back watercraft after their allotted time will now face a $20 charge for every 30 minutes the equipment is overdue.

Fees related to launching privately owned watercraft remain mostly consistent with previous seasons. The daily launch permit will continue to cost $10 for both motorized and non-motorized vessels. Annual launch permits, however, will see a change for motorized boats, rising from $100 to $125 per year. Non-motorized annual permits will remain at $100, and additional permits for members of the same household will continue to cost $30 each.
A new option will also become available later in the year. If annual launch permits remain unsold after Labor Day, they will be offered at a discounted price of $40 while supplies last.
Another new requirement for the 2026 season involves identification. Visitors renting boats or launching personal watercraft must present a state-issued or university-issued photo ID. According to the Parks and Recreation Department, the measure is intended to improve accuracy in rental waivers and enhance safety on the lake. Contact information will be stored electronically for up to 30 days for operational and safety purposes before being securely deleted.
