Indianapolis, Indiana – Hoosiers are being encouraged to start 2026 on a financially bright note by checking for unclaimed money that may be waiting in state accounts. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is reminding residents that thousands of dollars in forgotten funds are sitting in government accounts, often from old bank accounts, uncashed refunds, safe-deposit boxes, or wages that were never collected.
“Searching a name in our database takes literally just a few seconds, and you can do it easily on your phone,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Each year, thousands of Hoosiers are surprised to learn they have money just waiting for them to claim. Everyone owes it themselves to do a quick check.”
Unclaimed property is real money, and the process to locate and reclaim it is simple. The Attorney General’s office operates IndianaUnclaimed.gov, a secure and free online portal where anyone can search for funds under their name. Residents can also text CLAIM to 46220 to see if any money is available. Those who prefer more direct communication can reach the Unclaimed Property Division by calling 1-866-462-5246 or emailing [email protected].
The program has grown significantly over the years. In 2025, the Unclaimed Property team returned more than $88 million to Hoosiers, breaking the previous record set in 2023. Many of these returns represent forgotten funds from decades ago, surprising recipients with unexpected financial boosts at just the right time.
Attorney General Rokita encourages everyone to take just a few moments to check their names, stressing that it’s a quick and painless way to recover money that belongs to them. The website and texting options make it possible to search from a phone, tablet, or computer, giving residents flexibility and convenience.
With the new year underway, the reminder comes at an ideal time for families and individuals looking to make the most of 2026. Whether it’s planning for bills, savings, or small investments, reclaimed funds can offer a meaningful boost to personal finances.
For residents unsure how to start, IndianaUnclaimed.gov offers a simple step-by-step process, making the recovery of unclaimed property accessible to all. Attorney General Rokita’s office continues to prioritize transparency and public awareness, ensuring that every Hoosier has the opportunity to reclaim funds they may not even realize they have.
Starting the year by searching for unclaimed money is easy, fast, and free, and it could mean discovering hundreds or even thousands of dollars waiting to be claimed.
