Indianapolis Public Schools celebrates record graduation rate with Class of 2025 surpassing statewide averages

Indianapolis, Indiana – Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is celebrating a historic achievement as the Class of 2025 reached a record-breaking 93% graduation rate, surpassing the statewide average of 91.83% and setting a new standard for academic success in the district. This milestone reflects years of dedicated efforts by students, families, educators, and community partners to provide a supportive and rigorous learning environment that ensures all students have the opportunity to succeed.

According to data released on January 5 by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), the 2025 graduation rate demonstrates a steady upward trajectory for IPS. The Class of 2024 graduated at a rate of 87.5%, up from 81.5% in 2023, illustrating consistent improvement in student outcomes across the district. “This milestone is a testament to the hard work and resilience of our students, families, staff, and the entire IPS community,” said Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson. “This progress reflects sustained, multi-year efforts across the district, and the Rebuilding Stronger initiative that has strengthened school environments and community engagement. Together, these initiatives are helping ensure that more students stay on track and cross the graduation stage ready for success.”

Dr. Johnson emphasized that the 2025 graduation success is particularly notable when looking at non-waiver graduation rates. IPS students achieved a rate of 92.12% compared to the state’s 90.34%, highlighting the district’s ability to deliver consistent academic support and ensure that students meet graduation requirements without exemptions.

All four IPS-managed high schools exceeded the 90% graduation rate benchmark, demonstrating widespread academic achievement across the district. Crispus Attucks High School led the way with a 96.83% graduation rate, followed closely by Shortridge High School at 97.11%, Arsenal Technical High School at 94.62%, and George Washington High School at 90.06%. These results reflect a commitment to excellence across schools with different student populations and community contexts.

The Class of 2025 also saw significant gains among historically underrepresented student groups. Black, Hispanic, and multiracial students graduated at rates higher than their statewide peers, reflecting the district’s focus on equity and inclusion. Graduation rates increased across all IPS student subgroups compared to 2024, including both special education and general education students, English Learners and non-English Learners, as well as female and male students, all surpassing state averages.

Dr. Johnson credited the district’s academic rigor, innovative programming, and targeted student support systems for these outcomes. From advanced coursework and college-preparatory programs to personalized mentoring and guidance, IPS has created pathways for students to succeed academically and personally. “These results reflect the rigorous academic experiences provided to IPS students, as well as the dedication of educators, staff, and community partners who support student success,” Dr. Johnson said.

The record graduation rate also highlights the impact of district-wide initiatives, such as the Rebuilding Stronger program, which focuses on improving school environments, increasing engagement, and fostering community partnerships that keep students connected and motivated. By addressing barriers to graduation and providing comprehensive supports, IPS is ensuring that more students reach their full potential.

The Class of 2025’s accomplishments are more than just numbers – they represent the culmination of years of effort, determination, and collaboration across the district. Each graduate’s success contributes to a broader vision of ensuring that all IPS students are prepared for life beyond high school, whether in college, career, or other meaningful endeavors.

“This milestone sets a new benchmark for excellence and underscores the district’s mission to ensure that all students graduate ready to succeed in college, career, and life,” Dr. Johnson said. She added that the achievement is a reflection of the combined efforts of educators, staff, families, and community partners who work tirelessly to support student growth.

As IPS looks to the future, the Class of 2025 serves as a model for what is possible when a community invests in its students and provides the resources, guidance, and opportunities necessary to succeed. The record graduation rate not only celebrates student achievement but also affirms the district’s commitment to educational equity, innovation, and preparing every student for success in an increasingly complex world.

The success of the Class of 2025 demonstrates that with strong leadership, dedicated staff, and engaged communities, public schools can not only meet but exceed expectations, providing students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to thrive in the next chapter of their lives. IPS’s achievement is a milestone worth celebrating, a testament to what can be accomplished when a district prioritizes student success, equity, and opportunity.
