Indianapolis police investigate after man is found dead with gunshot wound inside crashed vehicle on near east side

Indianapolis, Indiana – Police in Indianapolis are investigating a deadly incident after a man was found with a gunshot wound inside a crashed vehicle early Friday morning on the city’s near east side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched just before 12:45 a.m. to the 800 block of North Tuxedo Street following a report of a personal injury accident. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a vehicle that had crashed and a man inside suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

According to information released by IMPD later Friday morning, the vehicle had struck a tree before coming to rest. Officers determined that the injured man was the driver and the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Emergency medical personnel quickly responded and transported the man to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim later died from his injuries. Authorities have not released his name, pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators are now working to piece together what led up to the incident. While the circumstances surrounding the gunshot wound and the crash remain unclear, police say there is no indication that the incident poses an ongoing danger to the public.

IMPD officials stated that they believe this was an isolated event. At this time, no suspect information has been released, and it has not been confirmed whether the gunshot wound occurred before or after the crash.

The department’s homicide unit has taken over the investigation due to the fatal nature of the case. Detectives are examining physical evidence from the scene, reviewing any available surveillance footage from the area, and working to establish a timeline of events leading up to the crash.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office is also assisting with the investigation. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death, which will help clarify whether the gunshot wound was the primary cause or if other factors contributed.

Residents in the neighborhood reported seeing emergency vehicles and police activity in the area during the early morning hours, as officers secured the scene and began their investigation. North Tuxedo Street remained partially restricted for a period of time while evidence was collected.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information related to the incident to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers. As the investigation continues, authorities say more details will be released when they become available.

For now, the case remains open as detectives work to determine exactly what happened during the moments leading up to the deadly crash.
