Indiana DNR invites outdoor enthusiasts to submit nominations for the expanding Trails Advisory Board

Indianapolis, Indiana – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is calling on dedicated outdoor enthusiasts to step forward and help shape the future of the state’s trail system. The agency has opened nominations for positions on the Indiana Trails Advisory Board (TAB), inviting individuals who are deeply involved in hiking, mountain biking, accessibility advocacy, trail maintenance, and other recreation-related groups to apply.

State officials say they are seeking nominees who not only enjoy the outdoors but are also active members of regional or statewide organizations, clubs, or associations connected to the user groups they hope to represent. Those selected will begin their three-year terms in March 2026, joining a board that plays a key role in advising the DNR on trail development, maintenance, and policy matters.

Board members meet four times a year, gathering in person on the first Thursday of March, June, September, and December at 3 p.m. local time. These quarterly meetings rotate locations around Indiana, giving members a chance to experience the variety of landscapes and trail systems across the state. Beyond the official business, TAB participants are often invited to take part in optional activities such as exploring new trails, touring outdoor facilities, or attending presentations by municipal leaders and parks departments on current recreation initiatives.

The TAB consists of 15 volunteer members representing the broad range of groups that rely on Indiana’s trail network. The board’s role is significant: it provides ongoing recommendations to the DNR, helps highlight emerging trail issues, and ensures that the perspectives of different outdoor communities are heard. Members are also encouraged to share updates from their respective user groups and bring relevant information back to their organizations, helping maintain a strong flow of communication between the public and state officials.

Individuals interested in serving on the board are encouraged to take action soon. Nominations are being accepted by the DNR Division of State Parks from Dec. 1 through Dec. 30. Those hoping to learn more about the board’s purpose, expectations, or nomination guidelines can find details online at on.IN.gov/trails-board.

With Indiana’s trail system continuing to evolve—expanding access, improving safety, and adding new recreational opportunities—the DNR hopes to fill the advisory board with people who bring energy, insight, and a strong commitment to keeping outdoor spaces welcoming for all.

As the agency continues its efforts to engage the public in shaping Indiana’s outdoor future, this call for nominations offers trail users a direct way to champion the places they love and help guide future decisions.
