Indianapolis, Indiana -Two-time INDYCAR SERIES champion Will Power is preparing for an exciting new challenge as he makes his sports car debut at the Indianapolis 8 Hour presented by AWS from October 16–18 at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Australian driver will join teammates Kenny Habul and Chaz Mostert in the 75 Express Mercedes-AMG, competing in the Pro class of the Intercontinental GT Challenge for GT3 sports cars.
The eight-hour endurance race on Saturday, October 18, marks a fresh chapter in Power’s illustrious career. Just six weeks ago, he was announced as the driver of the No. 26 Honda for Andretti Global in the upcoming NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, following 16 seasons with Team Penske, where he captured series championships in 2014 and 2022, along with an Indianapolis 500 victory in 2018. Power’s record at IMS is nothing short of remarkable; he holds 71 career poles, the most in series history, and ranks fourth on the all-time win list with 45 victories.
Few drivers have experienced the IMS road course as successfully as Power. Over his INDYCAR career, he has claimed five wins on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course, demonstrating both consistency and skill on one of America’s most challenging circuits. Now, he adds a GT3 sports car debut to that resume, driving for the same 75 Express team he was originally slated to race with at the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona. At that time, personal circumstances forced him to step away when his wife faced a serious illness.
“It feels great to finally get this opportunity,” Power said. “I’ve always been interested in sports car racing, and doing it at IMS, on a track where I’ve had so much success, makes it even more special. I’m looking forward to learning the car and getting the most out of every lap with Kenny and Chaz.”
Power’s entry continues a trend of INDYCAR champions stepping into the Indy 8 Hour. Last year, four-time series champion Alex Palou drove a Mercedes-AMG for Lone Star in the Pro class, highlighting the growing appeal of GT3 endurance racing for top-level open-wheel drivers. Power’s presence adds further excitement to the weekend, which will feature top GT3 teams and drivers from around the globe competing on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s famed road course.
The event is expected to draw a strong crowd, giving fans the chance to see one of the sport’s most accomplished drivers transition from single-seaters to endurance sports cars. In addition to on-track action, spectators can enjoy access to garages, paddocks, and fan experiences that showcase the teamwork, strategy, and technology behind GT3 racing.
Power’s new adventure in sports cars also represents a personal milestone. Balancing a career in INDYCAR with the demands of endurance racing challenges even the most experienced drivers, but his competitive drive and deep familiarity with the IMS layout give him a distinct advantage. By racing alongside Habul and Mostert, both seasoned GT3 competitors, Power has the support of teammates who understand the nuances of tire management, fuel strategy, and multi-class racing over extended periods.
For fans eager to witness this crossover of talent, tickets and more information about the Indianapolis 8 Hour are available through the official IMS website. With Power making his GT3 debut on a track where he has already achieved legendary status, the event promises to be a compelling weekend of speed, endurance, and high-level motorsports drama.
As Will Power takes on this new challenge, the Indianapolis 8 Hour provides a perfect stage for him to test his adaptability, expand his racing experience, and continue building a legacy not just in INDYCAR, but across multiple disciplines of motorsport.
